On starting my on service repair garage in Chesterfield in 93 I soon found need of a customer / invoicing Database.

So afer being introduced by a friend to Apha4 v4 later updated to A4V6 - starting from sctatch and after ONLY about 2000 hrs of work, I have (I like to think) a good working sytem which we use to this day in our very busy garage.

Since dumping venerable old 486 we are now running under windows 98.

Problem - we suffer about 2 - 6 crashes per day when changing invoice records (i may start an invoice as soon as vehicle arrives and then save & update as the job progreses) the invoice form is at the head of a 3 tier set.

Also I fancy updating to A5 (brain cells permitting)and would appreciate comments i.e. which version - how mutch -best place to buy etc.

many thanks Andy

Hi Andy

Welcome to the Board. There is Alpha4 Version 7 to consider but the best move is to Alpha 5 Version 4.5. This would be a tempary move as Version 5 will be out soon. It is a fantastic new product. Alpha would allow 100% of 4.5 against the new Alpha. There would be a lot to learn but we are all here on this Message Board to help. As the change over will happen over a period of time you will be able to transfer to 4.5 in your own time. You should get 4.5 now. Buy direct from Alpha.

I wud suggest updating your op sys first to windows 2000
it is much more fault tolerant and has task manager and easier to restart the prog than win98. win 98 hates 16 bit stuff

i am still on A5 v1 so get a few crashes mostly when printing.

Hi Peter

Get on to 4.5 as soon as you can then you will be able to get that cost set against the new Alpha 5.

Dear Andy,
I've used all versions of since Alpha 4 v3 and whereas I wouldn't start a new project with Alpha 4 I still have A4v3 applications running in busy commercial situations well and without (many) crashes. Alpha 4 is a great (and stable) product but Windows is not the most stable platform. That said I see no reason why you should be continue to experience problems if everything is setup correctly.

Alpha 5 is also a great product and I use it all the time but the change-over is not always painless though. My advice would be to get your present system stabilised and then learn Alpha 5 in your own time.

I am quite close to you M1J25 and would be happy to assist in any way I can.
