Using PCL4 printers I have no problem printing reports using the test field that the manual describes, where for example IF(SUMMARY->TOTAL

I just re-read my response and it makes no sense whatsoever.

this works fine in reports, not sure what makes no sense.

In my example, the "X" would be displayed rather than the invisible chr(127) ascii character. Otehr solution options might be to use a range box report filter in combination with a database summary.

Or just put in the field name in place of X
