I have a request from a user who currently does not have Alpha 5 installed on her machine, but she would like to be able to view the Alpha 5 databases that exist on 2 other workstations. This prompts some questions:

1. Can Alpha 5 databases be shared from a Windows NT Workstation 4.0 PC?

2. Can the existing databases be copied to an NT 4.0 server, and accessed by all parties that need them.

3. Is their a viewer that the person can use, since all she will need is Read access to the files?

4. If none of the above will work, how can the databases be shared by multiple users?

Kevin,

We have alpha 5 databases residing on an NT 4.0 network server with full shared access to about 300 clients. We set up folders on the server to contain the databases, sets, applications, etc, and then use the server to share the information. Alpha requires the "full access" share for updates to indexes, database files, etc. A runtime version of alpha5v1.02 is available and works quite well. Do your development on one or two machines and then just deploy the runtime modules to all those that need access, but not development rights. For view only, design screens that restrict what the user can do. All of this is easy to implement with Alpha Software.

If you need more specific information, e-mail me with the questions.
