View Full Version : Where Are You?

09-14-2003, 02:16 PM
In my Alpha class, I've toldmy students that there are Alpha users pretty much all around the world and, like most of us, I can rattle off some of the countries: US, Canada, Mexico, UK, South Africa, Netherlands, Italy, Australia and them I start straining to come up with more.

I think it might be interesting if users would chime in with their country of residence just to see how many countries around the world do, in fact, have resident Alpha users. This could also lead to a neat image on Alpha's main page with represented countries color coded.

Which of my invisible friends are you refering to ?

1.) the entity that exists as a malformed Alpha expression lives on a faulty keyboard and wonders if two single quotes' will make up a double quote" so that he can get the syntax correct ?

2.) the frustrated spam email that is addressed to me@ and wondering why he never gets anywhere in life, lives in a quarantined folder somewhere on my harddrive.

3.) the 20 meg ofnouse.dll that resides across some 4598 cross linked sectors on my harddrive lives in c:\recycled and despite remerous attempts to delete magically appears everytime I read a Microsoft privacy statement.

What? Each state is not it's own little country? In Wisconsin, we have our own little 48 square mile country called Madison WI. It's the state capital. Also know as 48 square miles surrounded by reality.

Dave, I'm sure there is an easier way to do this. If you
ask nicely, can't Alpha Software provide you with a count,
by country, of Alpha Five sales? No need for them to provide
names and/or addresses, so they shouldn't have a problem
with privacy violation.

best regards to all,
Melvin Davidson

09-17-2003, 06:03 AM

This started just as an information thing for my Alpha Five class and it's turned into a fun thing to see how much of the globe Alpha covers. If people willingly provide their country or residence, there is no privacy issues to worry about.

I think I might make up a map for the next alpha Conference with the countries (and US states) color coded.

Input is slowing down considerably.

As far as Canada is concerned we still haven't heard from anyone in: Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Newfoundland, New Brunswick or Prince Edward Island (my apologies if I'm wrong on my Canadian geography).

In the US from east to west: we haven't heard from Rhode Island, Vermont, South Carolina, Delaware, Washington D.C.,
Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Nevada or Hawaii.

As far as the rest of the world is concerned, we haven't heard from anyone other than Holland, Switzerland, England, Spain, Germany, Poland and South Africa.

This ancient thread has become somewhat redundent given that all one needs to do is fill in the appropriate user info and one's locale appears to the left on one's post.

12-04-2005, 05:17 PM

It surprises me that this thread that I started September '03, is still getting input. One day it might set a record for the most number of responses.:)

12-04-2005, 05:25 PM
Maybe it already has!

12-04-2005, 06:57 PM
Not yet. Mine makes it a tie with a similar thread on the v4 board.

I'll leave it up to someone else to post the tie-breaker.

To find out which threads have the most (or least) replies, just click on the "Replies" header to sort the column.

The prize is an all-expense paid trip to Australia! Congratulations!!

Now, all we have to do is to get Richard to open the Alpha pursestrings.

P.S. I forgot to mention it had to be used by the winner:(

While I think it is a good idea to let users chime in on this thread I'd suggest that they complete their profile as I suggested earlier on http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/alphaforum/showthread.php?97578-International-developers-please-complete-your-profile-by-indicating-your-country&highlight=country+profile

For fun, go to the IADN website and update or add your Address under MyAccount and I will generate a worldwide Google map of all Alpha Five developers.

Go to http://alphadevnet.com/myaccount.a5w and either login or create an account.

Include at least your City, State, Country and Postal Code. There also is a place to add a brief statement about yourself. I will add this to the rollover on the map for your marker.

Since many developers live in the same city, you should include your Address so that the Google markers are separated -- however for privacy, I won't display your address on the map and the marker will be at an "approximate" location near your address.

There are already 500+ members at IADN but I only collected Country up to this point.

Hillsboro, Oregon pleasantly nestled between the railroad track, the city dump, the sewage treatment plant, the local dairy, and a slow-moving river....yup, it's paradise!

No, but it's rich in heavy metals!

On a warm afternoon the scents mingle and waft over the house....fortunately, my nose doesn't work very well...at least, that's what I think my wife means when she says I don't smell good...

Here is a worldwide map of all IADN Members - http://www.alphadevnet.com/web_users_location_map.a5w

If you want to be added or to update your information, go to http://alphadevnet.com/myaccount.a5w and either login or create an account.

There is a place for you to add a short statement about yourself that will appear as the rollover for the marker.

For privacy, the marker does not point to your exact address.

Later I will add some simple filters to this map so it is easy to narrow in on a country or region.
