View Full Version : Shipping Information Coincidence

The day Alpha 5 V8 was released, I had an interview with a possible client about writing an application to handle the companies shipping and receiving.

All I had to show them was Alpha 5 V8 retrieving usps, ups and fedex realtime updates on 10 REAL records that I input into a small table. They were floored and in subsequent meetings I have them eating out of my hands.

Here's the kicker. They also use Airbourne and DHL. Not as much as Fedex or UPS, but even a small amount of usage with these companies will require that I integrate those companies into my application.

Will Alpha be adding these shipping providers to the language? I understand that there are hundreds or even thousands of shipping companies and you cannot expect Alpha to interact with all of them.

I am sure I will be able to write a function that gets the info, but having Alpha software writing a function for me is even better, wouldn't you agree?

I'm betting that the UPS and other built-in functions are using http_get() or one of the variants (http_get_page(), etc.)

Check out the help docs, and you'll see how easy it is to request info from another web site using A5. Airborne and DHL are probably about like the others -- submit a URL with a query and get back some easy-to-parse data.
