Is it possible to build a system that uses the new Groups (part of the security framework) without actually turning on the new security? A client wants a "normal" users file (incl. passwords, etc.) but the app is suited to Groups rather than Levels.

Sure thing* - with the Security Framework turned off, you control access to menus, functions by using Levels. Level 1 has less permission than Level 2, etc through Level 8. If you set Insert permission on a particular grid to Level 4, then anyone with Level 1-4 has Insert permission.

Groups behave differently. They act independently, not part of a hierarchy. You can say Admin and Power Users have Insert permission on one Grid, but Admin and Members has Insert on another Grid. Can be much more useful than a hierarchical approach.

If you try to use Groups without security framework turned on, you can't. And that's probably the answer. Just looking, in this particular case, if its possible the new Groups structure for permissions, but without requiring the full security framework to be turned on.

* Benefit of others, I know you know this.

Dunno right away Steve. Probably requires some discussion to figure out what you want. One way to look at it is "what don't you want?" with the full framework turned on? And is there a way to achieve that?

You may be able to cause a lot of the framework to be "not in effect" by your general security settings, and by putting every page into the "Always Allowed" column of the page security setup -- that sort of thing.
