Thanks now for any info.

How would you make a scl database if you didn't have one. Is there another tool needed or can Alpha do this? What file format would it be? Is it feasible to use this db in a LAN with users coming in over the net also? Would it ba faster with our own DBF files locally? and/or over the web?

Dave, I don't think there are tools in Alpha Five for creating SQL databases. Must use 3rd party database managers so far as I know. The format will vary depending upon which database manager is used. I don't know the answer to your last question, but I'd guess you would want the local network folks to access the data using their browser, rather than through Alpha Five, since the app would have to be running under the Web App Server, no?

Dave,

I have no experience in this but there was a recent thread that may interest you with regard to using a desktop app over the net using an sql backend.. The thread. (http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/alphaforum/showthread.php?t=67150)

Google led me to SQL Databases (http://www.daffodildb.com/sqldatabases.html).

Stan,

I did the same search to Mysql by way of google. I guess I will have to study it out. At least when doing clipper, basic, etc., I knew the direction(kinda) and file types to work with.

The concept behind a relational database is that the database manager handles all of the issues with the underlying files and their types. It is a different model than the dbf file model.

When you install the database and it's software, the tools that you'll need to deal with will be installed also. (At least one version of it anyway)

Study and practice with these tools will increase your comfort level, but don't approach this with the same mindset as you would with any dbf system. All of the functionality is handled via the software. Trying to deal with the individual files will only cause harm and confusion.
