View Full Version : Migrating - or maybe not

In the 1990's I developed an application for our law office, in Alpha4v6, tying together current client and contact information from PCLaw (an accounting software), historical file information, and document database, held for clients. The pclaw.dbf is zapped every month and the new data brought in from PCLaw in the form of a CSV file. The files.dbf is static, some editing changes are being made to it as errors may be discovered. The documents.dbf is an original-entry table, where we add dox, edit their attributes (when they're gone, etc). The three databases are linked on trimmed lastname+firstname indexing, and there is a master names.dbf, which just consists of the last name and first name (and where applicable, a client number).

The principal form is a combination of the tables, and we can zoom to them, etc.

It all works just fine, and it allows us to check for work we've done for clients, and also for opposing parties.

However, with W7, I want to bring it into the Windoze world.

I miss the wonderful printed documentation that came with Alpha4V6. Right off the bat, I am at a loss. I think what I need to do is to bring my dbf tables into a new database, link them, etc. etc. Well, "import" is not the way to go, clearly, but I don't really see how I can bring these dbf tables in to begin the work.

Can I have a little practical help to assist me to get going?

copy your files(dbf) to a new folder and begin working with them. If you are going to use version 10, then post questions in that forum. We will all help you.

Andrew, you may want to conciser upgrading PC Law to the SQL version then you can read and write data directly.
