Clear out List control

I want an easy way to clear out a list control.

What I mean is:

In a grid, you can setup the grid so that it won't display any records unless there is an active search with at least one search criteria. If you do a search and then blank the search criteria, it will go back to a blank grid, waiting for another search.

I can set a list to not fire until explicitly told to do so, but once you've put data in the list, there is no easy way to clear it. (At least that I know of.)

You can clear the search criteria for the list, but you can't clear the corresponding list. If you fire it with the search criteria blank, it will search all records.

I can do a list filter with an impossible set of criteria (like keyvalue = -1) but that seems like cheating.

I want an option in the list that works like the grid - do not display unless there is at least some filter criteria.

Note: In this case, I am using the action javascript "filter a list" from a search button. This may work differently if you use the lists actual search feature.

But an option on the grid to keep it from listing all records should be valid for ANY possible way of filtering the list.

What about using the "Delay render till explicit refresh" property in "List Builder" on "List Properties" tab?

If you really want to zap the contents of a list, here is some code that does that for a list with an ID of "DR_LIST":

Delay render until explicit refresh works fine until you do a search - then there is no way to blank it out again - at least not with a single command.

But I like your method better than mine because yours doesn't require an Ajax callback, thank you.
