Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help with blank screen

I have a mobile app running on an android tablet. It was build using phonegap. It works fine except for one problem......if I turn off connectivity to the tablet (eg wireless and mobile data off), and then try to start the app, I get a blank screen - completely white!

Not sure where to start debugging this...any help appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Greg

To start debugging, if you aren't already using the below method, I would:

My tablet is constantly connected to my computer in order to watch the console in the DevTools.

It sounds like there is an image or something that is being referenced instead of being part of the application - best choice is as Jeff said - watch the console in Devtools. Like I said in another thread I usually test things as a web app first and watch the console - then create the PGB. Since I do not do anything too fancy with plugins, the issues are usually spotted there in my case.
      Thanks for the tip Jeff!

OK. Thanks for the advise. I checked all my images and they all seem to be included in the project. I've got the tablet hooked up to chrome debugging, but I can't see anything obvious at the moment. I'll need to do some more digging.

          Re: Help with blank screen

I guess the next question is: are any of the UX components embedded objects? If objects are embedded, you may want to use the pre-computed html optimization as an ajax callback cannot happen if you do not have connectivity and you will get a blank screen.

What do you mean by embedded object ? And could you explain a little further on the pre-computed html optimisation ?

Ah. ok, yes I do have an embedded UX component. This is my main component which is embedded in the 'login framework'. (see the screen shot).

So it looks like I need the pre-computed html if you could explain what it is ????

              Thanks,
              greg

                Re: Help with blank screen

OK, found this property in the embedded component called 'Application Cache'. Seems like this is what I need. I've turned it on...but still the same problem.....the app shows a blank page once I disable the wireless connection on the tablet.

Should I also enable this in the main app ? (Not much doco I can find on this feature)

                  Re: Help with blank screen

OK, one step closer....there is a setting for the embedded object called, "Optimization (PhoneGap/Static HTML)". I have set this to "Precomputed". It now seems to work when I run it on my windows Laptop. However, if I build it with PhoneGap and run it on my tablet, it doesn't go any further than the login panel. This is the point at which it invokes the embedded UX. Seems there is something missing in the phonegap build. Do I need to manually copy any of the files in the StaticHTMLFileset directory to the phonegap projects directory before I build it? Can anyone advise......

                  Thanks,
                  greg
