Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

UX that works great in browser, but having issues in Phonegap. SQL related issues I think.

Hey all, I've got a UX component/phonegap app. I have a parent/child UX. Parent is the login screen, child UX is the main application. I am using persistent login. I've written some code that goes into a 'usersregistered' sql table and grabs a friendly first name. And then on the main application screen, it will say "Welcome, xyz". This all works great in a web browser. You can even refresh the browser and it will run through the code again and make sure to capture the first_name. I am using state variables as I have heard on this forum many times that this is the way to go for mobile apps.

So, my issue comes into play when I use the phonegap app. The first_name seems to get lost once the app is closed and reopened. Wondering if anyone would be able to double check my two UX components out?

    mobile_app.zip

snap_mobile_login is the login UX. snap_mobile is the main application. I did not attach any SQL tables, hoping that maybe someone could look at the javascript and xbasic and tell where the issue is. I would be glad to add tables if needed though.

Is there a way to debug a phonegap app in the same way you can use a browser? I just don't have any visibility as to why the browser is working fine, but the Phonegap app is not.

Yes... you need to do a Google search for Android Debugging Chrome. The general idea is that your Android device is connected via USB to your PC... USB Debugging is Enabled on your Android device... and then you use Chrome to "Inspect" the device while your app is running on the device.

There are 100 pitfalls to trip over while getting this set up... but once done... it sticks. Search and read and read again.

Inspect elements directly on your device and use the JavaScript console to debug your app, although breakpoints and stepping through code are not supported

Ok, I've got an Android device and have it connected for debugging in my Chrome browser on the computer. That all seems good. I can navigate in the chrome browser on the Android device, and that shows me information on my PC no problem. But I don't see anything that online that mentions "inspecting" an app. So is there a way to inspect a phonegap app? And not just webpages in the Android Chrome browser?

            Enter
            chrome://inspect/#devices
            into the browser address.

If you don't see your device listed, you may need to run adb.exe. You can find adb.exe provided with Android Studio (probably the safest place to get it from)

Any PhoneGap app. should be listed along with any web pages running on the device.

You don't debug on the device. You debug on your PC Chrome Browser... with the Device connected via USB to the PC. You enter... chrome://inspect/#devices into the address bar on your PC Browser... and then wait for a minute... and your Device should appear... and you should see something like... Webview in <your PGB application id>... e.g. Webview in com.mycompany.myapplication. Under that you should see a link... inpect. Click that and you're debugging.

Yep, I know the debugging is supposed to be on the PC, just having trouble getting that to work. I found I think the correct adb driver, and now finally when I go to chrome://inspect/#devices I see my device listed. But beyond that, I don't see anything to click on when I launch my phonegap app. Now, if I launch chrome on the Android device, I start to see things on my PC, just nothing happens with the Phonegap app.

If you launch the PhoneGap app on the connected device you should see what David described. Look in the console tab.
....and start placing console.log('[Your logging message]'), all over the place in your app!

You do not launch Chrome on the Android device... browsing in the Android device has nothing to do with any of this... you don't need to do that.

You should see stuff like the images below. Like I said... there are a bucket of holes in all this... and it doesn't work... until it does. Keep reading about how to get it done. Make sure your OS matches what you're reading about.

I seem to be spinning my wheels on this one. David, I can see the screen in your first attachment, and it shows my device. It just doesn't show the webview information when I launch the phonegap app on my device. Will keep banging along, but that is where I am stuck right now. Thanks.

Have you allowed "USB debugging" in the Developer options on the Android device?

Yup... it's a wheel spinner... until it works. Sometimes... you only need to unplug the usb cable from your device and plugin it back in again... and then stuff shows up.

Yes I have. And I've also installed the Android Debug Bridge software. I can go to a command prompt and run 'adb devices' and see my phone. And like I said above, when I run chrome://inspect, the model number of my phone shows up. I just never get the webview info to pop up when I launch my phonegap app on my mobile device.

Maybe unplug the USB and then in the device's Developer Options, hit "Revoke USB debugging authorizations" and then plug in back in again.
You should get a pop-up on the device asking you to authorize debugging from the specific PC. Maybe you missed authorizing it the first time around.
