Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

copy selected records from list1 and append to list 2

  • copy selected records from list1 and append to list 2

    I have two identical lists in an offline application. I want to copy a selected group of records from list1 and append it to list2.

    There is a nice function that will Move and append the selected records, but it removes them from list 1. I need to leave them on list1.

    Before i start writing a loop to do this I thought I would check if there is an easier way.

    I tried the following but this just overwrites the data in the target list...

    var data = {dialog.object}.getListData('list1');
    var listObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('list2');
    var _d = data ;

      If you are using pre-release build 4962 or newer and your target list has a detail view, you could maybe use the new addTableRowsBulk() method.

        Re: copy selected records from list1 and append to list 2

        There's a lot of info missing here... but if you simply want to add selected rows from list1 to list2 then get the selected data array from List1, get the data array from List2, add them together, and then populate List2.

        var list1 = {dialog.Object}.getControl('LIST1');
        var list2 = {dialog.Object}.getControl('LIST2');
        var selData = list1.selectionData;
        var list2Data = list2._rData;
        var newList2Data = list2Data.concat(selData);
        Or... as Jeff points out... use appendRows... even better...

        var list1 = {dialog.Object}.getControl('LIST1');
        var list2 = {dialog.Object}.getControl('LIST2');

          Actually, what was wrong with simply passing in the selectionData array into the appendRows() method?
          You don't have to loop through and append the rows one by one.

            Re: copy selected records from list1 and append to list 2

            Sorry it's not selected rows. I run a filter to bring in a set of rows from the file system to the list, but I could then do select all and go that route. i ended up just looping through the filtered list1 rows and using listObj.addTableRow(data,ops); with listObj.suspendPersist = true; as the list is saved to the local file system. I didn't look at appendRows as this is an updatable list, but I'll give it a try.

              Re: copy selected records from list1 and append to list 2

              One more note... these lists hold a large amount of data and the application runs on an underpowered Samsung J2 Mini's. As a result I found that I can't bring more than about 200 records into a list at a time without performance issues. So while List1 may only have 100 records to transfer, List2 could have 10,000 records. To filter the list and bring in all List2 records to do the concat would cause the devices to be unresponsive.

                Had a feeling there was a lot more to it. All that info should have been in the first post.

                  Yeah,, I mentioned it was an "off line" application but probably should have been more descriptive.

                  Thanks taking a look at.

                    Re: copy selected records from list1 and append to list 2

                    You should only be appending to the second list, so you don't need to loop through it at all right? As I understand it you are only looping through the first one to find the correct records to append, right? When you select multiple records from a "multi select enabled" list (if that is how you are intending to select them) then you can simply call the selected records, which is stored in an array for you already. GetValue can be used with .selectionData to return data from all selected rows. Once you store that in a variable you can then append the data to the 2nd list. Should work for you.

                      That sounds interesting Sean. Could you show example code for this?
