Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Compare two date/times in a grid

    I have a grid with a begin_datetime and end_datetime.

    I want to show an error in-line in the grid when the end_datetime is less than the begin_datetime.

    In this case, I am not trying to stop the system from saving or anything, I just want a piece of text to show when that happens.

    So I have a piece of text in the grid and in the show/hide expression of the text I have:

    End_Datetime > '' and Begin_Datetime > End_Datetime

    That works great for the date portion, but not for the time.

    ie:

    Begin_Datetime = 04/10/2018 10:00
    End_Datetime = 04/10/2018 09:00

    These values do not cause the text to show and I want them to.

    How do I get it to recognize the time portion?

    if you convert the date time to a number. You can then compare the numbers.
    d1.valueOf() > d2.valueOf();

      Larry,
      If you do something like this in the interactive window, you can see that "begin" is not less than "end"

      Begin_Datetime = "04/10/2018 10:00"

      End_Datetime = "04/10/2018 09:00"

      begin = ctod(word(begin_datetime,1))+ctot(word(begin_datetime,2))

      end = ctod(word(end_datetime,1))+ctot(word(end_datetime,2))
      ?begin
      = 04/10/2018 10:00:00 00 am

      ?end
      = 04/10/2018 09:00:00 00 am

      ?begin< end
      = .F.

      = .F.
      You can use that in the Xbasic validation or in an onBlur event to do an ajax callback and show an alert.

        Is this a process you want during grid data entry, grid data render, or both?

          If you want to do this client-side... you'll need to convert your fields from date strings to date objects. Once they are date objects, you can compare them.

          Code:
          var bd = new Date();
          var ed = new Date();
          bd.fromFormat({grid.Object}.getValue('G','BEGIN_DATETIME',{Grid.RowNumber}),"MM-dd-yyyy 0h:0m:0s");
          ed.fromFormat({grid.Object}.getValue('G','END_DATETIME',{Grid.RowNumber}),"MM-dd-yyyy 0h:0m:0s");
          var diff = ed - bd;
          This is running off a button in the Grid part. If running from somewhere else, {Grid.RowNumber} may not be appropriate... so you may need
          Code:
          var rowNum = {Grid.Object}._selectedRow;
          or
          Code:
          var rowNum={grid.Object}.getSelectedRow();

            I think this is what you're looking for. All client side. https://www.screencast.com/t/asQqIYBjqTx

              Thank you all for your support!

              I am going with Lee's method as it is closest to what I was trying to do.

              As a bit of background, the data already has some bad values in it, but I can't stop the system from working on every record that is messed up. So I want to show the error message, but not force a fix.

              It's not an emergency and it doesn't always matter.
