Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Migration to Alpha Cloud Issue

I have a simple time keeping web app I developed for my business use (hosted by my server) and its been working fine for a couple of years now. I recently migrated this app to Alpha Cloud and connected to a Maria DB. After cleaning up some data path / references etc it again works with one exception ... the user ID variable (ulink) from web security settings and which is associated with the logged in user will no longer populate into the records table. The setup for this is that a hidden field in the grid requires the initial value to be =session.ulink_ID. Now whenever any user enters a time record, their ID is always recorded as 0. I've checked the database tables and all the web security tables are there and complete. They obviously are able to be referenced otherwise you wouldn't be able to log in to the app. Any ideas what is going wrong and how to rectify?

    Hi Dirk,

I know they have been trying to deprecate ulink for some time. Check the following post as it relates to IIS. Alpha Cloud is fully based on IIS.

    https://www.alphasoftware.com/alphaf...?t-111179.html

We have several apps now on the Alpha cloud which depend on passing user data into components for filtering purposes (as well as populating data) and it works fine. We do not, nor have we ever used ulink.

I have a companion Users table to hold all of my users detailed information. I link that table to security based on their userid (email address). My users table has a 32 character GUID and I put that value into a session variable when they login to be able to refer back to their user record at any time.

Yep Steve, that makes total sense.

As an aside: I like the following in your tag line: "There is no Cloud. It's just someone else's computer."

For years I've tried to get my father to understand....without much success. :)

Thanks Steve, I'll give that a try. Out of interest why do you set up a separate users table when there is one automatically created by Web Security? Can that not be refered?

Re: Migration to Alpha Cloud Issue

Hi Dirk, you have an additional table to that you can define additional information and not have to mess with the default security tables. As an example, let's say you wanted to have a table of "clients" and "vendors" and you wanted their registration to be different (requiring different fields).

Re: Migration to Alpha Cloud Issue

Sean, understand. My needs are simple, I looked at the Web Security table contents and noticed that the ulink field was there and populated and was considering using this data via a SQL Lookup because my app was originally configured to use ulink (which no longer get carried through as a session variable in the new server as I've been advised at the beginning of this thread). Anyway, I think I'll move with the times and try Steve's GUID suggestion as a session variable.
