Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha V12 (Anywhere) Licensing

    Hi Alpha Developers

We purchased Alpha Anywhere (Developer, Application Server and Runtime) in June 2015. These were purchased as one off payment (perpetual).

We intend to use only the Browser web application (NOT Mobile), development and Runtime components of Alpha Anywhere as we are upgrading our DesKtop and Web Application from Alpha Five V10.5.

    Questions:

Will the Alpha Anywhere Application Server stop working without an annual subscription ?

Do we stop getting security updates?

Do we stop getting other updates ?

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Kind regards

    Raj

    Re: Alpha V12 (Anywhere) Licensing

You should contact your sales rep for the most correct answers applicable to your specific licenses. However, the older perpetual licenses (which are no longer offered) included a one year subscription for updates and perpetual use of those updates after the subscription expiration. This means that unless you have renewed, you will be limited to using the Alpha Anywhere release that was current in June of 2016. If you are using that release, or an older one, your software will continue to function. If you install a newer release, if will not run and you will need to reinstall an older release.

Sales and marketing aside, I strongly urge you to ALWAYS run the latest release of the Application Server and all other software used by your applications. This is very important from a security standpoint as older releases may quite possibly be more easily exploitable by malicious attackers. There have been quite a number of security updates to Alpha Anywhere and third-party products which we rely on, including Windows itself, since 2015. It was a failure to stay up to date on new releases that led to the Equifax breach that resulted in the disclosure of the personal information of at least 145 million people.

Good advice from Lenny there. It's a shame Alpha don't provide security patches for old versions at no cost to the customer, but I can see why that might prove difficult given how they distribute the package.

KIV you can only install up to the latest full release on your license, not any pre-release that may have been published between full releases

Just to clarify a bit - you cannot use a prerelease from after the latest official release if your subscription is expired. You can continue to use pre-releases from before that latest full release if desired. But in no way am I recommending that anyone does this - see my previous post regarding security.

Thank you Lenny for your response to the Alpha Five V12 licensing. Can you please clarify the following.

Am I to understand from your response that Alpha Anywhere v12 purchased with a perpetual license needs to be upgraded to a subscription license in order to address any security flaws in Alpha Anywhere software. In other words perpetual version of Alpha Anywhere v12 is an unsupported (obsolete) product.

          Kind regards

          Raj

(We started using A5 V7 (2007) when the cost and upgrades were only about $150 per shot, so it was affordable).

Does this mean we can continue to use V12 (as up to 26 Jan, Version 12.4.5.4.7, Build 5487) or not?

If not, what are our options? go back to V11?

                  Thanks
