Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can you populate a Filed Lookup .... Client Side?????

    Hi All,

    I am building an offline (not phone Gap at this stage) app to run on iPad Minis for a client
    Does anyone know is there a way to populate a LookUp from client-side rather than SQL or Server side

    I can populate a Dropdpwn from a Data Cache, e.g client-side-data-cache:Techs(Tech,Tech)
    But the question is... Is it possible to populate lookup from DataCache?
    From what I can see lookups can't be, which is a real shame.

    Please see video
    Here is the sample UX in the video

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Can you populate a Filed Lookup .... Client Side?????

    Have a look at video UX_V12--128.

    This video shows how your can define a Javascript array and re-populate the edit-combo.

    You need to get your client-side data cache into an array... something like this...

    function populateLookup(){
    	var _onSuccess = function(data) {
    		//create an array from the cache data and re-populate the edit-combo
    		var arrData = => Object.values(x));
    		var lookupObj = {dialog.Object}.getControl('DATA3');
    	var _onFail = function() {};
    	var _filter = '';
    	var _order = '';
    I created a Client-side Data Cache named "Data3" using static data with this the structure below. Yours will be different, and not static data, but the concept should be the same. It depends a bit on your data.

    	"prefix": "Mr."
    	"prefix": "Mrs."
    	"prefix": "Ms."
    	"prefix": "Dr."
    	"prefix": "Prof."
    	"prefix": "Lord"
    Unrelated... in your Javascript function "setLabelDivs", I'd change all that "if else if" stuff out for a switch statement.

    Also, in your Javascript function "PopulateDropdows" (spelling) you may be able to filter your Data Cache in the call itself. Have a look at the example for the .getFromDataCache() method. Since you're only getting one data cache, you don't need to use .readDataCacheItems().

    Even if you couldn't use a filter... instead of an explicit loop... have a look at using Javascript .map or the JSON.parse reviver function. Very powerful stuff.

      Re: Can you populate a Filed Lookup .... Client Side?????

      Thanks, David,
      As always you are the JS Guru, but also... as usual, half of what you have said has gone completely over my head :)

      I can get your code to work but because my data series has multipule columns the Edit-Combo end up with multipule columns. as per this screenshot.
      I can't really work out how to insert ONLY the column 'LookupValue' into the Edit-Combo.
      Can you give me an example of the syntax I can use to get a single column out of arrData,

      I can't work out how to filter as you were suggesting but maybe it is a syntax issue again.

      DataSeriesAll Columns.PNG

      Thanks in advance.

      P.S. I have taken your advice RE: switch statement, Thanks

        Re: Can you populate a Filed Lookup .... Client Side?????

        Hi David,

        I have got Filtering sorted.

        var _filter = function(data) {
        //if(data.MethodType == 'MT') return true;
        if(data.MethodType == vMethodType && data.Branch == vBranch) return true;
        else return false;

          Re: Can you populate a Filed Lookup .... Client Side?????

          For incoming multiple columns... where you only want to pick 1 column for your array...

          var arrData = => x.LookupValue);

            Re: Can you populate a Filed Lookup .... Client Side?????

            David, I had somehow not known about until you told me about it a few months back. I now use it all over the place. Or even filter + map like:

            var arrayCat4 = data.filter((data) => (data.ItemNumber == '14000-NC' && data.Company == currentCompany)).map(data => data.Cat4);

            So fast and easy to use once you get used to it. I hardly ever mess with listObject methods anymore.

            Just wanted to say thanks again!

              Re: Can you populate a Filed Lookup .... Client Side?????

              Yes... map, reduce, filter... all used together is quite something.

              You should also have a look at the Reviver function available as an option to JSON.parse(). I came across it a few weeks ago and it's brilliant.
