Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

SQL Query Order For Dropdown List

I have a dropdown list populated from a SQL Query: SELECT DISTINCT Wire FROM Cables ORDER BY Wire

It returns the character data like this:

    W1
    W11
    W12
    W109
    W2
    W20
    W21
    W3
    ... etc

I would like the data displayed (numerically increasing) like this instead:

    W1
    W2
    W3
    W11
    W12
    W20
    W21
    W109
    ... etc

Anyone know how to query the table to do this, I can't seem to figure this out

Re: SQL Query Order For Dropdown List

    With MySQL, this should work:

SELECT DISTINCT Wire, CAST(Wire as SIGNED) AS casted_Wire FROM Cables ORDER BY casted_Wire ASC , Wire ASC

But I guess you only want the Wire column. So try:

SELECT Wire FROM (SELECT DISTINCT Wire, CAST(Wire as SIGNED) AS casted_Wire FROM Cables ORDER BY casted_Wire ASC , Wire ASC) AS temp

Thanks Jeff, but I'm using MS SQL and SIGNED is not a valid data type.
Even if I use a valid numeric data type such as DECIMAL it can't do the conversion from character to numeric. Which makes sense I guess, how could it know how to convert W1 to a numeric value.

Re: SQL Query Order For Dropdown List

Maybe this? It strips out the first character "W"

select distinct convert(int, substring(wire,2,20)) as Wire from cables

Or is there more than just getting rid of the "W" ?

Edit: Do you need "distinct"? Maybe:

select Wire from cables order by convert(int, substring(wire,2,20))

Edit again, ignore all above. Try this ugly thing:

        Select wire from Cables
        order by convert(int,Left(SubString(Wire, PatIndex('%[0-9.-]%', Wire), 8000), PatIndex('%[^0-9.-]%', SubString(Wire, PatIndex('%[0-9.-]%', Wire), 8000) + 'X')-1))

Re: SQL Query Order For Dropdown List

          Or this:

          SELECT Wire FROM Cables
          GROUP BY Wire
          ORDER BY LEFT(Wire, PATINDEX('%[0-9]%', Wire)-1), CONVERT(INT, SUBSTRING(Wire, PATINDEX('%[0-9]%', Wire), LEN(Wire)))

Even for data that looks more like:
          'W1','W11','W2','W109','A05','AA3','B05','A4','A6','A05'

Jeff - my last suggestion was because I looked at the image in the original post - it includes "W4a" and "W4b", complicates matters a bit.

Jeff, no unfortunately it still chokes on the W14a convert to integer.

Steve, it works, that's awesome!!! See screenshot.

Thank you both very much, I really appreciate your help with this.
