Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Using a multi url ssl certificate

    Hi

I have a client with three individual applications each running on separate instances of Alpha Anywhere traditional ie: NOT IIS. Each is about to go onto separate sub domains.

Is it possible to have a single multi url ssl certificate that will work with all three applications. I cannot see how that would be configured in the Application Server control panel?

    Does anyone know?

    Kind regards

    Glen

Basically you need to use reverse proxy. CloudFlare is one option.

I use CloudFlare but I has a little different configuration. I use frontend web server and reverse proxy and then WAS instances are running localhost in different ports. So I have reverse proxy(CloudFlare) then web server and its reverse proxy enabled and then WAS instances. So I use just port 80 and 443 for traffic.

But you can use maybe also directly CloudFlare. Then you enable SSL in CloudFlare(free or 5 per month) and you install to WAS a 20 years Cloudflare SSL certificate(free). Here you can read about extra ports CloudFlare supports for HTTP/HTTPS traffic. But I have not tested this combination.

You need to test that everything works as expected with CloudFlare.

Each subdomain will use a separate instance of thr Classic Alpha Anywhere Application Server. In those instances, you can use a certificate specific to that subdomain, or you can use a multi-domain certificate. As far as the Application Server is concerned, the multi-domain certificate is no different than a basic certificate and there is no additional configuration required.

        Hi Lenny

Thanks for the response. Bearing in mind this is not my strong point, can I still generate a CSR from one of the instances for a multi domain certificate. Have not got my head around how to bind each instance to the correct domain, is that best using separate IP addresses?

        Thanks

Alpha Anywhere does not have the ability to generate a multi domain CSR. You will need to use a 3rd-party tool to generate a CSR and private key. You will then keep the private key for use on your server, and send the CSR to the certificate authority.

Yes, it is best to use separate IP addresses for each instance.

Also, I know you said this will not be running under IIS, but moving to IIS would make all of this much simpler for you. I definitely recommend moving to IIS before doing all of this new configuration work.

Re: Using a multi url ssl certificate

I cannot speak for alpha or whatever server you are faced with, but:
I run a hosting business for many of my clients and myself by way of a master host. They supply free SSL on all of my and own and my client sites. They automatically turn on Comodo SSL each time a new site is put up. Makes it easy for me! Some have several domains added on and all get SSL. Time lag is about 2-3 days for it to be in effect. Websites/webapps are all on Linux with SSD, SSL, php 7 and very fast. I have not experienced the speed from windows hosting like this with a lot of traffic.

Point is, yes one main cert can handle more than one domain and app.
Listen to Lenny- knows more than I do.

The point is also that do you want that your SSL shows in section subject alternative name also other domains (DNS). With SSL there is two aspect for customer Encryption and Trust. Basically SSL does not mean anything unless you know how the whole chain is built from servers to clients browser. In bad case only the last part of chain is under SSL.

On this occasion need stay on the classic server, but point taken for others I will have to sort soon.

My SSL is from Comodo and it uses wildcards for my other sites which are still configurable for off and on as I need. All is controlled from Cpanel on each website. The certs are updated every 3 months. Once a site is generated, it takes 1-3 days for SSL to kick in. Each site is checked automatically ever 24-72 hours. SSL is covering site, email, ftp.
