Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    XBasic syntax for destructor method

    Hi,

    I thought I read somewhere in the documentation that the syntax for creating a destructor method for an xbasic class was ~ClassName(), but Alpha is not liking that. Can someone direct me to the docs on this?

    Thanks!

    Edit: I found where the syntax shows the ~ClassName(), here: https://documentation.alphasoftware....s%20Syntax.xml, but it just isn't working.

    Hey Adam,

    To create a destructor (special member function that is called when the lifetime of an object ends.)

    DEFINE CLASS TestClass

    dim read protected write Name as C
    dim Data as A
    dim read protected write static InstanceCount as N

    FUNCTION ~TestClass()
    debug(1)
    END FUNCTION
    END CLASS

    Dim a as testclass
    ?A
    = '
    Clear as V() '
    static DefaultDataType as C() '
    TestClass as C() '
    TESTING as C() '
    ~TestClass as C() '
    Name = ""

    DELETE A < this will trigger the ~TextClass function

      Alex,

      As I said in the OP, I found that in the documentation... but Alpha doesn't seem to recognize the ~ and won't let it save/compile.

      I get an error message:

      Error at line: xx, column: 1
      Error: Expected value

      I get this error even if I copy your code above exactly.

      Code:
      DEFINE CLASS TestClass

      dim read protected write Name as C
      dim Data as A
      dim read protected write static InstanceCount as N

      FUNCTION ~TestClass()
      debug(1)
      END FUNCTION
      END CLASS

        Hello Adam!

        We got your doc report and tested the Xbasic destructor syntax. We also tested the code quoted in your post in the current release. We were unable to reproduce your issue.

        If you think you found a bug, please submit a FULL test case to [email protected].

        Thanks!

          Re: XBasic syntax for destructor method

          Adam,

          You need to include the Alpha version/build in your posts. Alpha often cannot replicate issues because they often test bug reports with internal builds... not the public builds everyone else uses. At times these differ. Or... Alpha may test in their current release not knowing what release you're using.

          Using build 5221 I get exactly the same results as you.
          Using build Pre-release build 5417 I do not see an error when saving the class. However, there is an error using the class
          Using the current release, 5445, there are no errors and the Class, and it's functions, work properly.

          Whatever issues there were have been corrected in the releases leading up to, and including 5445.

          What build are are using?

            Thanks David, that makes sense.

            I am also using build 5221.

              Then you should download 5445 and put it in as a separate installation. You do not need to update your current 5221 install. That way you can test the current release and ensure it works as expected... and this may help confirm an issue with 5221. That may, however, leave a big question as to why Alex does not have an issue.

                  Didn't the latest release only come out yesterday or today? Not everyone wants to immediately update due to compatibility concerns.

                  Anyway, I will be updating as David recommends, in a separate installation.

                    Hey Adam,

                    That is a fair call.

                    Sorry would of been the a pre-release version, I have like a rolling 5 Versions of AA installed. One being the Official Release and the rest being 4 versions of the pre-releases.

                      No worries Alex. I am not that advanced yet as an Alpha user, but I'm working towards it! Thanks for the help.

                        I was going by the release in your signature.

                        Tests should detail what version they are being run under. If the posted issue doesn't specify and the tester doesn't specify then the tests are essentially invalid.
