Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Problem working with javascript string containing backslashes

    I'm trying to write a js function to get the file name from a windows path. The problem I'm having is that js sees a backslash as an escape char and therefore the string variable doesn't have any backslashes in it.

    Here is my code.

    function GetFileNameOnly() {

    var path = {grid.object}._getValue('D','FULLPATH');
    //if FULLPATH = 'c:\test\testing.txt' js sees it as 'c:testtesting.txt' and therefore the next bit of code doesn't get the filename because it can't find the last backslash.

    var filename = path.substring(path.lastIndexOf("\")+1);

    {grid.object}.setValue('D','FILENAME',filename);
    }

    Have spent hours on google trying to find a solution but no luck. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Richard.

    Escape your backslashses with another backslash...

    Code:
    if(path == 'c:\\test\\testing.txt'){

      Thanks David,

      To give more context, the path is being set by the file upload ajs so I don't have control over the path string, hence my challenge.

        Then you'd have to add more context because it's unclear what you actually want to do.

          Hi David,

          I'm trying to do as mentioned in my original post, the only additional info is that I can't insert double backslashes in the path string as you suggested because I'm not setting the path string myself, the file upload ajs is.

          Here is the code from my original post with some additional comments.

          function GetFileNameOnly() {

          var path = {grid.object}._getValue('D','FULLPATH'); //value in the fullpath field is 'c:\test\testing.txt'

          //alert(path); returns c:testtesting.txt because js strips the backslashes. Therefore the next bit of code doesn't find the filename.

          var filename = path.substring(path.lastIndexOf("\")+1);

          {grid.object}.setValue('D','FILENAME',filename);
          }

          Richard.

            Re: Problem working with javascript string containing backslashes

            I'm not seeing that behavior. After I upload the file, my grid detail textbox control is updated with the fully qualified filename by Alpha.

            If I then run a Javascript function to get that value, backslashes are included. I get exactly what Alpha sends the textbox control. What shows in your FILENAME field after file upload?

            What build/version of Alpha are you using?

              Re: Problem working with javascript string containing backslashes

              I was a couple of versions behind so I've updated to v12.4.5.4.6 Build 5447.

              The value in the grid detail field is being set correctly by the upload ajs and looks like this 'c:\test\testing.txt'

              I can assign that value to a variable using var path = {grid.object}._getValue('D','FULLPATH');

              alert(path); now returns 'c:\test\testing.txt' which is good.

              However I still can't get the filename from the full path using this.

              var filename = path.substring(path.lastIndexOf("\")+1); or this var filename = path.substring(path.lastIndexOf("\\")+1); (note the 2 backslashes).

              Any ideas on how to get file name only i.e. testing.txt?

                Re: Problem working with javascript string containing backslashes

                You need to escape the backslash... as in your 2nd example. This works for me.

                Code:
                var filename = path.substring(path.lastIndexOf("\\")+1);
