Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Input / Display mask question

    In my UX, i need to enter/display a field as follows:
    - first character is either + or - sign
    - then numbers in the format 99.99
    So the field looks like +7.95 or -12.4
    How can this be done exactly?

    Thanks
    Jaime

    Don't know the context or use case but this may help you understand.

      I think the question needs more detail. Data bound UX? List Control? Calculations being done?

      A negative number will always carry the negative sign.
      Are you entering -9999 and want to return -99.99?
      Are you entering +123 and want to return +123.00?
      Are you entering 123 and want to return +123.00?
      Are you entering 123 and want to return +1.23?
      If a data bound UX, what value is the database carrying... and what do you want to show in the UX. Examples really help.

      Some examples of what you want and some detail would help. Also the version/build of Alpha would be nice.

        Re: Input / Display mask question

        My example is super basic but it works. enter a number into the value field, and the calculated value shows up in the actual_field. I dont know if it's what you want but even if it isn't it might give you an idea on how you might want to do it.

        plusNminus.a5wcmp

        Like I said it is SUPER simple but it seems like your just looking to concatenate a field with the plus sign for display purposes. Negative numbers will show the negative sign. The actual_field is a character field and could just be used to display the value.

          Re: Input / Display mask question

          Sorry for not being more precise in my original question, it's not a calculation issue but just an input mask/display mask issue.
          These are plain simple textboxes where an optician enters a value for the Sphere reading. The format should be as described in my question.
          In VFP i had character fields with an inputmask of #99.99 which means first character is either + or - or digit, the rest are digits. I then had validation to limit first character to either + or -

            Re: Input / Display mask question

            Still some information missing... however...

            To keep your "+" and "-" in the database you'll need to use a character field type.

            In your UX TextBox control, in Client Side Properties, turn on Client side formatting and change the Format type to "Custom".

            In Format definition make sure the "Type" is set to String. Your Parse Out value will be...

            Code:
            data = formatInput(data)
            This calls the Javascript function "formatInput" and passes in the value of the Textbox control.

            The Javascript function is...

            Code:
            function formatInput(data){

            	if(data == 0 && data == '') return;
            	var inSign = String(data).substring(0,1);
            	if(inSign != "-" && inSign != "+"){
            		alert("Value must start with + or -");
            		return data;
            	}
            	var inData = parseFloat(data);
            	inData = inData.toFixed(2);

            	switch(true){
            		case (inData > 0):
            			return "+" + inData;
            			break;
            		default:
            			return inData;
            	}

            }
            If the incoming value is 0 or null then just return... nothing to do.

            Otherwise, grab the 1st character of the string and check for a + or -. If neither, return the input value with an alert.
            Instead of alert you could use .clientSideValidateField() for a nice red error message under the control.

            If we have a + or - then convert the string to a number. Then trim it down to 2 decimals places.
            Then, in the Switch statement... if the # is greater than 0, add the prefix "+" back to it... and return that string.
            If the # is not greater than 0, then just return it. If it's a negative number, then it still has the sign and we don't have to add it as a prefix.
