Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How best to enter date and time

I'm struggling with an app where i need to obtain both date and time information. My intention was to use a date/time field for storage, but am struggling with an easy way to allow entry. Do you recommend separating them out into 2 fields for entry, keeping them together, or what? I started with a single field and my initial problem is that the initial display doesn't seem to adhere to the formatting I have on the field. It initially comes up with a descriptive display of the date and time with full time including time zone. However, the formatting that I have on it is "MM/dd/yy 0h:0m am". After I lick on it and get the date/time picker it comes back in that format. But, when I save it it loses the time. So, then I thought I would separate them, but I can't find a JavaScript function that will pull just the time portion in a properly formatted hh:mm:ss (even though I don't want/need the seconds). I can get the milliseconds since xxx, but nothing like what we can get with Xbasic and the TIME() function.

I'm leaning towards going back to the single field, but can't figure out why it won't save the time in the date/time field. Basically, when I debug in xBasic, the datasubmitted field has the time at 12:00:00 am (meaning that it didn't save the time.

I'm hoping that some thoughts and ideas on the formatting, etc. will get me where I need to go.

    Thanks,

    Rod

Re: How best to enter date and time

I changed it back to a single field. If I edit the field (even just clicking on it and clicking OK), then the time is saved with it. However, if I just accept what is in it (Wed Dec 12 2018 09;11;58 GMt-600) then I don't get the time in the field. But, if i click on it and click Ok, it reformats to the formatting that I set the field to (MM/dd/yy 0h;0m am) and then it saves the date. I don't want them to have to edit the time if they just want to use the time provided and i would like it to respect the formatting that I have on object. So, what am I doing wrong?

Here are some other things to consider when storing date/time: https://www.red-gate.com/simple-talk...orribly-wrong/

Alpha has added extensions to the Date object in JavaScript:
      https://documentation.alphasoftware....ions/index.xml

If the Alpha extensions do not provide what you need then you may need a 3rd party library like moment.js:

        Rich,

Thanks for the answer. Great information. I figured out what I was doing wrong after breaking it out into a single field test. Thankfully it was painless once I got down to it. Just needed to format the field in the same way that I wanted it before updating the textbox object with that information. I'm going to hold onto the info in case I want greater control over it with a 3rd party extension.
