Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha Server taking up resources over time

I have an Alpha server that is continually hogging resources.

When I first turn it on, it works fine. But after heavy use, it starts using up more and more cpu cycles until (within about 48 hours) it is constantly using over 90% cpu at which point the system is system is unusable and I have to restart it.

    Repeat.

This system has been running for years - it was not until I updated to the November 27 version (the second to last update now) that this started happening.

Is anyone else experiencing a similar problem? Any ideas what I should look for to fix?

I have other servers using that version and they don't seem to be experiencing the same problem.

You'll never find out why... but it wouldn't surprise me to find Alpha is killing resources. That new property grid is far worse than the old one and most likely has more holes in it than the old one ever had.

With the number of Alpha updates pushed out fast, without testing, and the number of Windows updates pushed out... something's bound to crash.

Have you reverted to your original version, whatever that was, for testing? You have other servers using what version without issues?

      David,

Rampant speculation about what is wrong isn't helping me out here. Was hoping for some actual advice about what could be causing the resource grab.

I manage 5 Alpha servers and I keep them all at the same version. So I have moved them all to the second to last version at this point and it would not be easy to go back.

I know there is a new version out a couple days ago, but I like to give the versions a little time to marinate before going for it, unless there is a specific thing the version fixes that I need.

Larry: Have you checked out the logs? If not turn them on, delete their contents to start fresh, then restart the server. If you can check it's resource usage every hour. Maybe you'll see a spike. Then you can goto the logs to see what might be happening.

Larry, it's years of observation more than anything else. Your comment about giving a new version a little time to marinate is some proof of that. Why does a new version need time to marinate? You'll never find the cause of the resource grab. After an Alpha and Windows update just before Christmas I found my disk activity growing to 100% after several minutes and then completely shutting down my system. I'll never find the cause... but I wouldn't be surprised to find the new property grid has something to do with it... it's far worse than the old one for random errors.

            Yep, I did that.

See my other post on the subject. Also poked Alpha about this to see if they have an answer. Looks like I'm being attacked.

Re: Alpha Server taking up resources over time

I let all patches for all software marinate before installing.

Not making excuses for Alpha, but it's a big product with a lot of new stuff going in all the time. Stuff breaks and it's impossible to test it all.

I am just as guilty - I've pushed plenty of things to my client's systems over the years that I thought I had thoroughly vetted, only to find that the customer does something I didn't anticipate.

The nice thing is, if I can find the culprit, Alpha is very responsive and fixes issues quickly most of the time. Can't ask for more than that.

Unfortunately, it's a common thought. I don't think it's too much to ask for a bit of testing.
