Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to exclude records from a list (SQL Help)

This is more of an SQL question, but hoping for some guidance.

I have an app with about 100 users. I want to create a notice board - where a user can put a notice up for others to see. I want to give each of my users the ability to mark a notice as READ so that it does not show up when they log in the next time.

For the record I'm using SQL Server 14 via ZebraHost.

    So I have two tables:

    Notices
    - this contains the basic notice. NoticeID the key

    NoticesRead
    - this table contains the NoticeID and the MemberID of the users who have clicked that they have read the notice.

This is what I have in my SQL so far:

    SELECT Notices.NoticeID
    FROM Notices Notices
    LEFT OUTER JOIN Notice_read Notice_read
    ON Notices.NoticeID = Notice_read.NoticeID
    WHERE Notice_read.NoticeID IS NULL

This works but I need to filter the Notice_read table for the MemberID. At this point if any member marks the notice read it will no longer appear.

When I open the UX I will be passing in the MemberID with an argument ARGMEMBERID.

So what i need to is only evaluate the Notices by the filtered Notices_read table and filter it for my logged in user.

Any suggestions on how to structure this?

    Thanks in advance

    Darren

When does the NoticeRead record get created? If it gets created when the user clicks that it was read then you can use a Not In subquery.

If MemberID is a column of Notices_read, I think all you need to do is to add a 2nd criteria (and maybe use INNER JOIN rather than LEFT OUTER JOIN?):

      SELECT Notices.NoticeID
      FROM Notices Notices
      LEFT OUTER JOIN Notice_read Notice_read
      ON Notices.NoticeID = Notice_read.NoticeID
      WHERE Notice_read.NoticeID IS NULL
      AND Notice_read.MemberID = :ARGMEMBERID

        The code below should work.
I shortened the aliases just because it made things easier for me.
I used <MemberID> because you somehow need to use that value.
The option to use it as an argument is still there, just up to you on your
        coding.

        Code:
        SELECT N.NoticeID
        FROM Notices N
        LEFT OUTER JOIN Notices_read R ON N.NoticeID = R.NoticeID
        where <MemberID> not in (
        select q.MemberID
        from Notices_read q
        where q.noticeID = N.NoticeID and q.MemberID = <MemberID>
        )

          Lee,

The Notice_Read record would be created when the user clicks on the record in the list - This would insert the NoticeID, UserID and Timestamp into the Notice_Read table. So when my user logs on the messages that they have read will be in the Notice_Read table.

Try what Gregg wrote. That's the not in sub-query. That will do the trick.
