Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Tabbed ui control variable components

    Good Day All

I'm in the early stages of a design for a corporate client. They require a web application to deploy on their intranet. They have specified that although they will use a central database some of the components and reports differ between departments. Most components of the web client will be common to all departments.

I'm considering creating a table in the sql database which will contain the department names and details of the components that are unique to that department. Then running JavaScript to get the name from the table and load the appropriate component. However I'm not sure how to write the script and how to implement this in the Tabbed UA Control.

The alternative is to create a web application for each department, maintaining all the web apps will be a challenge though.

I really will appreciate suggestions and advice how to do this.

    Best Regards

Why not assign each department a security group and use that as who gets to see which form?

or use session variables from the employee/department records to show/hide buttons that call reports/components.

Re: Tabbed ui control variable components

        Good day Lance and Chris.

        Thanks for your response.

I originally developed this application for the client using MS Access and SQL a number of years ago. They are extremely happy with the old app but now want to take it on-line. Access of course cannot do this without going the Remote-Desktop route.

I understand the suggestion to hide/unhide buttons or to use the security group facility.

        To further illustrate my challenge:
A department stocks different types of batteries. The stock list is shown using a grid which lists all the batteries in stock as each battery has a serial number and is listed individually. The detail view is a pop-up UX. the different battery types (eg. Lithium-ion, Nickel Cadmium, Nickel-Metal Hydride, Lead-Acid) have totally different details. When the user clicks the link on the grid the UX that opens must be specific to that type of battery. The various types of batteries are not fixed as newer technology is acquired. To create links on the grid for each type of battery is therefore not an option. Neither will the use to hide/unhide controls be effective.

In MS Access one would just use a procedure in VBA to lookup the name of the appropriate form in a data table and insert that name in the OpenForm code.

I am trying to use the same function in the script that runs when the user clicks on the link.

        Best Regards
        Andrew

Re: Tabbed ui control variable components

I'm working on something that sounds similar but probably less variable than your scenario, so apologies if this doesn't apply. I have a UX where the data entry requires that I select a product type, and the UX data bindings then includes data from that product type. The product type definitions are defined in a separate table, so on the UX there's a number of fields that are shown or hidden based on the product type.

I'm fairly sure you could build this with JSON and populate a UX as well, but that's not something I'm as well-versed in.

Or are you just displaying this data or does it need to be editable? You could also write a script that produces an HTML string and then display that.

Hi Chris. Thank you for the suggestion.
I am trying to design the application like I would if I was using MS Access or VB6 in a desktop environment. I am not proficient in JavaScript or HTML which is why I am exploring Alpha.
I think this old dog needs to learn new tricks!

Re: Tabbed ui control variable components

Hi, as Chris said you need a dynamic structure.

              Table of Product_Type
              Table of Product_Type_Definition

The definition table stores the product_type_id, field_name, field_type, and possibly a default field_value

Explore creating a query/view on the database side that can be read which contains the name of the product type and the definition.

When the user wants to add a new item of a particular type then you read that query/view and use that to populate a list control (there is a lot of info on here about populating a list control with data)

The list control would be linked to a product_detail table which has the same structure as the definition table for the most part (something like product_id, field_name, field_type, field_value.

Use a Form View control to determine which control to show based on field_type.

What you are asking isn't easy but has been done many times using Alpha Anywhere. If you need something built for you, my firm or another one here can help you.
