Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Import Data into a List Control from Excel

The "Import Data into a List Control from Excel or Ascii file" action seems to have stopped working correctly for me after the update to Alpha 4.6. It seems to only grab the first column and none of the others. I reverted my Alpha IIS server back to pre-4.6 and it started working again. Has anyone else had this issue with the new update, or am I just special (like my mom always told me)?

Re: Import Data into a List Control from Excel

I did some testing while trying to make a bug report and discovered what it was doing.

I have a spreadsheet that's generated by a third party application that I'm uploading into a list control. The spreadsheet has three header rows and then the actual data rows follow.

Pre 4.6, Alpha would grab all columns and if the value in the first row was blank, it would give them an F name (F1, F2, F3, etc.). Then in the "Pre-process uploaded file Xbasic function", I would delete the blank rows and process the rest.

With 4.6, if the first cell is blank, it just doesn't import the column. So I have nothing to process.

I don't know if this is a bug, or if they think they were fixing something with this change.

Re: Import Data into a List Control from Excel

        Hi Jim,

I am not seeing what you are seeing, I have an xls spreadsheet with 1 sheet with 4 columns of data, there is a header row then 2 blank rows then the data starts, within the data there are irregular spaced blank rows. The import function, in itself does exactly what it should.

My issue is the xbasic pre-processing function only exposes e.tmpl = UX definition and e.data - an Xbasic array with the data to be imported. I need it to expose the e object like other xbasic functions do so that I can access other data from the ux and arguments and use this to pre-process the data. I did ask Selwyn for this to be exposed but he said
it would certainly be possible for us to modify the code to make argument values available, but this is not something that we have had any requests for and it would not make sense for us to adjust our priorities for this.
so I am back to editing every spreadsheet to add the data I need manually and then importing via the mySQL for excel addin

Thanks for the reply Lance. My use of the term Header may have been misleading. By header I meant the report title, date, then the column headers. In the attached image when I run this in 4.6 I only get one column named "Export Module". Prior to 4.6, I would get the Export Module column followed by F2, F3, F4, and so on.

Re: Import Data into a List Control from Excel

I had an issue with the "Import Data into a List Control from Excel" action javascript that I reported to Alpha in April. The issue turned out to be Microsoft ODBC drivers and not Alpha. This is Selwyn's explanation...

it turns out that AA has two ways of reading an excel file
            1. using Microsoft ODBC drivers
            2. using the libXL library (which we bundle with AA).

the libXL library is much more robust than ODBC and therefore I have switched the code that does excel import to use the libXL library.
as a result of this change your excel file will import without your having to make any changes to the file.

Now, I have no idea if it's related or not. That said, how would Alpha know what's just a report name header and what is the actual column names? I instruct my users to only have column names in their excel sheets they upload.

Re: Import Data into a List Control from Excel

              Hi Jim,

Just formatted my spreadsheet to have 4 rows before the data as per yours and put Export Module in A1 and the same date time as you in B2 and the import ran and put 46 rows of nothing into the list which is very strange!

If I were you I would delete the first 4 rows in your spreadsheet, this is from the help file
In the case of a CSV file, the field names must be specified in the first row of data in the file. In the case of an Excel file, column headings in the first row must match the field names.
              and give that a go
