Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Use an existing word document for reports or exporting

Hello everyone. Perhaps I have just overlooked this. I'm not sure. I have a 4 page word document that is formatted a certain way. It is the exact way my customer needs it. It was not made by me, and it seems as though it is all one long table with various sized rows and columns. Some areas are free text areas, and if you type more than the amount of room that is there, the table grows (like a word table does). My customer wanted me to create a grid that the employee can enter all of the information for good tracking, and when they hit print (or whatever we name the button) it will look exactly like the one made in Word would look like.

I'd love to copy the tables over (with formatting and all) and insert the fields from AA, but it doesn't seem to be that easy. The end result is a PDF, so it doesn't have to go to Word at all, but the format has to be identical (font, table lines, shading, and expands with extra text as necessary).

I played with the Reports in AA, and it doesn't seem to do what I need, but I am not fluent with the reports section, and I am not married to using reports if there is a way to export it to a perfectly formatted PDF in some other way.

    Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

You can have a look at this entry in a 2014 thread. Its our usecase. You need to install adobe flash player however.
We managed to get it work also with docx documents.

It is however not an easy solution if you are new to Alpha....... But we can share the xbasic code for it

Ger, I watched the video. That is really nice. In my mind I was picturing Alpha being able to save it to pdf so the user could just upload it to where they have to send it (outside of the software that I am creating), but putting it into Word then the user save it as pdf should work too. That will definitely save me from having to recreate everything.

The people who ultimately receive the pdf will complain if the user does not enter everything exactly how their template is designed. They have it (well, had it, until I got a hold of it) locked down so no one could alter the template. My goal is to make it so the recipient will never know it was created through my software, and what you did in the video would probably take me to that goal.

I have only been working with Alpha for 2 months now. I have made a lot of progress, but I am sure I would struggle. If you wouldn't mind sharing some of the methods in xBasic, I would really appreciate it.

No problem, we have in our software also a feature that creates from the merged files pdf's on the fly and returns them to the user. And one can authorize users access to the merge word files, or pdfs or both. But that requires that you can install some cheap or free pdf-creater software on the server at which you also host the alpha webserver. Only tested with classic server, and we don't know wether is scales well with many users or very high usage. In any case merging word files is blazing fast, creating pdf's from them takes a few seconds......
I will send you the xbasic code by direct mail, if you need assistance to tweak it or for server setup, we can agree on some mentoring.
