Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • PhoneGap Application and Multi-thread comms over the mobile network

    Hello again.

    AA V4.6.1.2 (6012-5338)

    (Sorry for Aussie spelling)

My PhoneGap app works off-line, and has been doing so for 5 plus years.
A recent client with the app installed on an iPAD operates in a geographical area which has very poor cell network service is certain areas.
The app works fine using the List Offline mode, they take a lot of photos as well.
The app synchronises as best it can during poor service. I have had to do a lot of work capturing time-outs and loss of service etc.

They have requested that I add some Navigation features and my current thinking is to utilise a web service call to Google directions via opening a standard web browser.
I have got this working, however, in the remote areas the synchronisation process consumes the bandwidth which means that the Navigation call sits there looking rather blank.

I have played around with the standard AA widgets to display Navigation using the in-built map display. However, as you may have seen in my other post (https://forum.alphasoftware.com/show...-to-rotate-map), my client require the ability to rotate the map. (Yes, very demanding)

    A few questions;

Can the AA application via PhoneGap can be tweaked such that one communication request takes priority over the data synchronisation?
Is there a way to tweak the iPAD such that it will give priority to the Browser Web service call over the AA synchronisation?
Does AA manage this if I use the out-of-the-box navigate within AA?

    Thanks in advance
    Peter

Sorry mate, have the same problem with regional clients, its a real bummer, can I ask what is the rotations of the map need for?

Hi Pete, crappy weather at the moment.. Snow, Rain and Fires.

The client has been in implementation mode now for nearly three years, long story, !@#$$%%*&*.
Map rotate was not raised until last month. I suspect it is because they recently had their CIO change (actually two new persons in the role in 6 months, another story) and I believe there are other influences at play. Trying to make me jump hoops.... SHUSH!

Currently looking at all the synchronisation settings to see if I can get my app to send batches of data, but wait between transmissions to allow them to do the Nav stuff in poor regional areas.
Also investigating if I can farm the Navigation to something like MapBox which allows users to download map data to the device and has on device navigation which does not need network traffic......

      Do you have any ideas?

Sync can be done programmatically without using the prebuilt stuff. Alpha Anywhere makes all of that available to you. If you haven't seen this page it's a good place to start:

Here in WV we have terrible service and have had to setup sort of strict sync rules. For example, images are not synced at the same time as data. We relate images by a device generated GUID rather than a related list. This helped solve a lot of sync issues.
