Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Refresh Edit-Combo Lookup after adding a new value

    How do I refresh an Edit-Combo lookup after allowing the user to modify the choices?

    I'm talking about a textbox control with a lookup set to Edit-Combo. It is a SQL based lookup.

    Re: Refresh Edit-Combo Lookup after adding a new value

    There is {dialog.Object}.refreshDropdownBoxChoices(), but I suppose that won't work on an EditCombo, but you could try. But the easy way it select 'Load Data Method' in the field's properties and set it to "Ajax Callback". Each time the user clicks the lookup it pulls the current data.

      Re: Refresh Edit-Combo Lookup after adding a new value

      Perhaps, but …

      I am allowing the user to add an entry. That is happening in a Window on the same UX. So, the user will click a button to add a new entry, and when they leave that window I want to:

      1) save the new entry into the lookup table.
      2) Make the value of the textbox the new entry

      To complicate matters, I am displaying the name of the entry, but storing the ID - so I need the list to refresh so it will know the name of the ID I am putting in there - but no one is clicking the lookup a second time when they return from the window. (Though I could try setting the focus, maybe that will help …)

        Re: Refresh Edit-Combo Lookup after adding a new value

        Use an Ajax Callback to update your SQL table with the new entry. Then, in this same code, select the items from your SQL Table for the Edit-Combo List. This will include your newly added entry.
        Convert the RecordSet to a JSON string, convert the CRLF to commas, add [] for use as an Array and then send that data string back to the Client into a Javascript function.

        Overall, you're saving your new entry, then getting your Edit-Combo items and putting them into a format that you can use back on the client with Javascript.

        Once back on the client, convert your JSON string into an Array, get a pointer to your edit-combo, and set the edit-combo control with your current items. Then set the selected value of your edit-combo to your newly added item.

        XBasic to send back data to a Javascript function:

        function getEditComboData as c (e as p)
        dim cn as SQL::Connection
        dim rs as SQL::ResultSet
        dim args as sql::arguments
        dim sqlStmt as c
        dim flag as l
        dim newData as c
        flag ="::name::test")
        sqlStmt = <<%str%
        	SELECT COMPID, COMPNAME FROM tblcompanies_copy1
        flag = cn.execute(sqlStmt)
        if flag then
        	rs = cn.ResultSet
        	newData = rs.ToJSONObjectSyntax(-1,-1,.t.,.t.)
        	newData = "[" + newData + "]"
        	newData = crlf_to_comma(newData)
        	newData = js_escape(newData)
        	getEditComboData = "setComboData('" + newData + "');"
        	getEditComboData = "alert('SELECT failed');"
        end if
        end function
        Javascript function to process data and "refresh" the edit-combo:

        function setComboData(newData){
        	//refresh the edit-combo
        	var newComboData = JSON.parse(newData);
        	var editCombo = {dialog.Object}.getControl('TXTCOMPANIES');
        	//set the selected value of the edit-combo
        Depending on how your edit-combo is set up, you'll need to get the selected value for the .setValue().

          Thank you David. I will try that out as soon as possible and report back!
