Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Web Theme Builder won't display code

I'm trying to edit a SASS theme in the Web Theme Builder, using the Alpha videos as a guide, but code does not appear in the editing window as expected. It remains blank no matter what I try. I am able to add or insert a new variable, but this seems to wipe out all other code in the style sheet. I would just like to make a few small changes to an existing theme but am not sure what is wrong.

I am able to change the colors and fonts properly without any issue in the 'Adjust' tab. It is the 'Code' tab that does not seem to work. Any ideas what may be wrong?

    I am using Version 12.4.6.1.7, Build 6402

      Hello Giancarlo,

Based on your screenshots here, you're modifying an Inherited theme. Inherited themes are based off of an existing the theme. There may be a refresh issue with respect to changing the color on the Adjust tab. The Code tab may not be refreshing the preview with the new color. I encourage you to report this to [email protected] with steps to reproduce.

Continuing on the topic of Inherited Themes. The Web Theme Builder doesn't include all of the code from the Base theme when you create an Inherited theme. It's similar to a style tweak. The code editor only shows the CSS/Sass that has been created in the Inherited theme. You can add whatever CSS/Sass that you need without worrying about the base theme - that will remain unmodified. Your theme in the screenshot is based on Alpha System theme. The Alpha System theme is stored in the install folder. It is not recommended to modify system themes in the installation directory as they will be overwritten the next time you run the Alpha Anywhere installer (updates, etc.)

If you want a theme that contains all of the code -- a regular Web Theme -- you need to detach the Inherited theme from the base theme. Currently the only way to do this is during the theme's creation. From what I see here, you have copied the Alpha-Amber theme. You can create a new detached theme from Alpha-Amber by copying the System Alpha-Amber style and checking the Detach the style from its parent style? checkbox in the Copy System Style dialog when prompted.

Re: Web Theme Builder won't display code

Thank you so much for the incredibly detailed reply, Sarah. It is very much appreciated.

I see what you mean about the detached styles now and what you recommended did the trick. I also now see that Alpha-Amber, Alpha-Bluegrey, etc are all (of course) inherited themes themselves relative to Alpha, so simply choosing Alpha and editing its color and tweaking its code did the trick as well. I am a bit of a SASS/CSS novice, so it's helpful for me to see the existing code to tweak rather than inserting new code from scratch, although I can see how the streamlined approach you mentioned for inherited themes is useful for more seasoned styling developers.

        Thank you again!

You're welcome. Yes. All of the variations on the Alpha theme were implemented as Inherited themes. The style picker will say "Inherited" in parentheses next to a theme it is an inherited theme.

I have given a number of webinars on the subject of styling tools in Alpha Anywhere. I recommend these two webinars:

If you watch these and something is unclear, let me know. We're working on beefing up our materials around styling.

I also try to make sure to upload any relevant example components to the StylingApplications repository in our alphaanywhere GitHub account. It includes the presentation slides from the webinar I gave this week, the last slide of which as a collection of links to articles on various how to and overview topics. The video for this week's webinar will be uploaded in the coming business days and will eventually be linked into the README.md of the repo.

Also, if you haven't seen it, the Web Theme Builder article has a lot of information about the Parts of a web theme and styles in general. It doesn't go into super deep details, but I would love to also have some feedback on this one.

Not trying to muddy the waters as my case may be isolated but here's what was happening and what I did to rectify it. When creating a new UX I would go into it's properties and (using the Alpha theme) edit the color palette to select lets say, the "coffee theme". It would work great in local preview. I would publish and the theme was messed up. Looking into dev tools it might say something like cannot find css file _4278342384624 - etc. I am still not sure why the css will not publish with the component. So since it was working as expected locally I just went into the live preview folder grabbed the missing file and placed it on my server - works great now.
I also noticed that none of the css files for the Alpha themes were getting published, but again it was an easy fix to place them manually. In defense of AS I probably modified the original Alpha theme a long time ago. So if it works in local preview - just know the files you will need are there...
