Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    V12 Mobile Login

Can anyone from Alpha comment on whether V12 will have a login component that is more appropriate for logging in from mobile devices? I've seen workarounds on the forum but it would be nice for V12 to have this hashed out - as V12 IS supposed to be geared toward mobile devices.

The first thing that came up with a prospective user was that typing in an email address from an Iphone or tablet is a no go. I agree completely. I really liked Ken Tjia's example but that beyond the scope of my abilities at this point.

    Thanks

Jose - I'm not clear what you want, or what you want different. Can you be more specific?

And, the UX component makes it easy to build darn near anything you want. I just can't tell what you want.

      Re: V12 Mobile Login

      Hi Steve,

If I currently try to log into my application using the standard login components that V11/V12 ships with I have to type in my email address (I am using the email address as the configured User ID within the Security Settings) and password when I try to access the application. This is fine for doing so from a PC but doing it from a phone is time consuming and difficult. Unless your email address is something like [email protected] or similar this really is a pain.

I was hoping that V12 would have a special login component for mobile devices that uses a pin number and password like the one Ken Tjia did. That just makes more sense for mobile devices.

I'm sure the UX component can do anything you want IF you have the programming capabilities, but I'm not in that camp. I'm sure this is something a lot of folks might like without having to reinvent the wheel.

        Re: V12 Mobile Login

        hi Jose,

I remain using the same log in pad for more than a year.
extremely effective, however would consider adding alphabets
to accommodate email entry, it is not difficult.

I hope alpha has a better concept as you said.

Have you tried the Value option of "User ID Configuration" instead of Email Address. Much shorter User IDs can be used. I was going to switch to Email address and you just convinced me to stay with "Value", as it has worked fine for years.

I have not but if Alpha does not address this then I guess I will have to. Just an FYI to anyone planning to use the 'mobile' features of V12, do not use an email address as a user id because if you do your users will hate you.

I REALLY hope Alpha does something about this because mobile functionality in V12 is being touted but all that is useless if my users hesitate to even login. Try typing [email protected] or [email protected] from an iPhone... not fun.

              Re: V12 Mobile Login

I've been working on this problem for the past week and didn't realize there was already a thread going on this. I created a UX component that allows for graphical login and a component to setup the login credentials for the user. The login makes use of multipress buttons, horizontal list box and callbacks so codes are secured in the server. You can see a demo at the following address..

This is still a work in progress but the first version is up for testing this week.

I just tried it from my Driod. It's working, what were you getting in response.

Typing in John or Liz as a User ID value is a lot easier then than the email address.

                            Re: V12 Mobile Login

I agree, but that does not work if user ID's are setup as email addresses.

The main point is that having to use the keyboard on a smart phone is just not the right way to get a user logged in from a mobile device. What Tom and Ken have done are more appropriate for mobile devices.

It would be nice if Alpha could include in V12 the capability to login on a mobile device without having to use the keyboard. I don't mind buying into the 'mobile is the future' concept and maintaining a subscription to get those new features but this is one I just can't really accept as it is.

It seems half-baked in my opinion - here is the all new mobile application development platform but, by the way, the authentication process is carried over from desktop/web. I think Alpha has an AWESOME product (V11 and V12) so I don't want to sound like I am not happy. I'm just trying to provide some constructive criticism.

Will someone at Alpha PLEASE comment on this? Is this under consideration or are us non-programmers out on our own to figure it out? I have V12 now but because I cannot use the mobile features (due the inadequate mobile login features) I would be just fine using V11. When my subscription comes up for renewal this will be a factor.

I use a banking app from a high profile bank. My username is quite long. Yeah its a pain, but people do it all of the time. Not that big of a deal. Can it be improved sure. I like the idea that Tom Brondolo has put forth.
