Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Repopulate Checkbox List in UX

    There are a couple threads here about repopulating checkbox lists, but I'm having no luck, and it may be because of some of the new stuff I'm using.

    I have two controls. One is a List Control, to select a value in filtering the data for the Checkbox control.

    The second control is, of course, the checkbox control, configured to Render as Button List. It can be bound to a table or a variable, I don't care, as long as it's something dynamic. On the List Control Select, I need to fire an event to re-define the data source for the Checkbox control, and re-populate the checkbox control. But I can't find any way at all, and, I've been at it for about 10 hours now, have tried an awful lot of things.

      Re: Repopulate Checkbox List in UX

      Steve,

      I can get the checkbox control to re-populate from a UX List control selection... but the Checkbox control loses it's Button-List option. I can't see a way to set a Checkbox control to use the Button-List option in code.
      It doesn't really help, but this is how you almost do it...

      In general:

      1. Run an event from the List Control. e.g. onClick
      2. Assign the List selection to a global Javascript variable
      3. Run an Action that you create, to run an Ajax Callback, with an included Javascript Function
      4. The Javascript Function grabs the global Javascript variable and sends it off to the callback
      5. The callback gets the javascript variable (your List selection), and uses it to query your database for the new checkbox control selections
      6. You format the sql result into a crlf list
      7. You call a5w_checkboxes to reset the checkbox control.

      In a bit more detail...

      From your List Control, the onClick event (or whatever you'd like to use), use the getValue method to grab the value from your list and put it into a global javascript variable... something like

      Code:
      currAdminId = {dialog.Object}.getValue('list::list1::admin_id');
      {dialog.object}.runAction('setCheckboxId');
      The runAction is an Action I created, which calls an Ajax Callback. The Ajax Callback includes a Javascript function... something like this...

      Code:
      function getListAdminId() {

      listAdminId = "AdminId=" + currAdminId;

      return listAdminId

      }
      AdminId is now part of the e object in your Ajax Callback.

      From here, follow Video D52.

      If you need more detail let me know and I'll post more.

      Have you looked at using the UX Data control Button List? It's a bit different than the checkbox control button list option, but may work... I haven't tried it yet in this scenario.

        David - thanks for this. Selwyn was generous with some suggestions, the result including 3 more instructional videos. I was waiting for them to be posted so I could point to them before following up here.

        A little more time than usual? Yes. More time than I had? Yes. But the resulting tool I have, plus the knowledge to do this again -- which I think I will use a lot -- is still very much worth it. I was thinking -- it may have taken me longer than usual to do this, but in any other platform, achieving this would be a much much bigger job. Even the saw was a great invention, but it took me a lot of practice before I could cut a straight line. I'll watch for those videos to be posted, and follow up here.

          Yes... this is a whole new world we're living in now. For the same reasons you state, it was worth spending time trying to find a way to re-populate the checkbox button-list control - the gains are excellent. Can't wait to see what Selwyn has come up with.

                  Hi Pete,

                  I can see your post #2. The link on it and the link you put in post #8 both point to the Alpha 5 TV advert 'The Evolution of Alpha Five' on YouTube

                  The videos to repopulate a checkbox list in a UX are now on Alpha's YouTube channel here

                    Thanks lance - I've been feeling invisible with some of my responses (or lack of) these days.
