Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Marking locations on an image in a Ux component

    Hi,

    I am trying to convert paper questionnaire to an online version of a chronic pain questionnaire, and one of the questions has me completely stumped in terms of how to turn it into electronic form.

    The question is an image of front view and the back view of a person's body - with the accompanying text "Please use the diagram to shade in areas where you have pain"

    Is there a way to put this type of graphic in a Ux component, and then have the user make marks on the graphic (doesn't have to be shading, could be a bunch of X's, dots, etc), which can be saved? Or does anyone have any creative ideas to accomplish this task?

    Many thanks,

    Nick

    I'd try to use the image as a background in a div or so with on the foreground a matrix of small transparent squares about the size of an "X"
    Each square represents a field in a table. In the onclick event of each square do an ajax callback to set the value of the corresponding field + to show a transparent square with a visible "X"

      image mapping. Jay Talbott and I have both done some of this so you'll find some info with the Search tool here. Each area's Onclick event makes an AJAX Callback for you do to what you want.

        Steve is right. I use Visual Imagemapper from Vicentas.com because it has all possible events covered. Once you understand the syntax all can be done by hand but having a gui makes it much easier.

            Peter,

            I know & I am sorry that I did not mention the downloadlink without the crap: www.vicentas.com/imagemap/viminstall.exe

            I actually sent them an email to complain about the crap, but the program is good.

                  Re: Marking locations on an image in a Ux component

                  Thank you Frank, Steve and Peter for your valuable comments! I have downloaded both Vincentas and Coffeecup and am playing around with each.

                  I am quite the novice, so could someone tell me how to put the mapped image onto a Ux component? I tried inserting an image control, but I don't know where to paste the html code generated by the image mapping program. I tried inserting as an html page (embedded object), as created by the mapping program, but that didn't seem to work. I couldn't find any previous discussions on the message board on how to do this.

                  I found some stuff on defining a hotspot in alpha (found it in the help menu), but I don't know if would also apply here...

                  Many thanks,

                  Nick

                      Re: Marking locations on an image in a Ux component

                      Nick - forewarning - this is not A5 101. And every application will be a little different. But here's a little from one of my uses that you may find helpful. In this case, I'm displaying a profile of a dolphin, with mappings for OnClick events.

                      First, find an appropriate place to display the image. You can put this in, say, a static text control wherever you need:

                      Code:
                      <img id="dolph_profile_lft" name="dolph_profile_lft" src="Imgs/DolphProfile_LFT.jpg" usemap="#lft" />
                      <map id="lft" name="lft">
                      	<area alt="L1" href="javascript:map('L1');" coords="273,59,405,94,411,105,410,114,300,104,273,101,273,59" shape="poly">
                      	<area alt="L2" href="javascript:map('L2');" coords="195,25,275,125" shape="rect">
                      	<area alt="L3" href="javascript:map('L3');" coords="95,60,195,125" shape="rect">
                                . . . . .
                      </map>
                      Then a javascript function to handle the href. In this case, users are just clicking on a body portion of the dolphin, and I'm filling a field named Body_Region with some descriptive words (this syntax is actually for a grid, but you get the idea):

                      Code:
                      function map(reg)
                      {
                      var freg = '';
                      switch (reg)
                      {case 'L1':
                      	freg = 'Left Side: Caudal Dorsal';
                      	break;
                      case 'L2':
                      	freg = 'Left Side: Dorsal-Mid & Lateral';
                      	break;
                      . . .
                      {grid.Object}.setValue('D','BODY_REGION', freg);

                      }
                      This is really cool stuff once you get it working, so don't be discouraged. Do just one region -- one small piece at a time to make sure you have it working, then roll it out for more.

                          This IS cool stuff!

                          One question, how do you define the shape to come up with the coordinance? Is there a way to show it during development to define it?
