Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Have UX LIST "onClick" open a PDF

I have a UX LIST component that shows a set of PDF documents. Available to me in this LIST is a path to the underlying documents (stored under the webserver root).

In A5v11 I was able to display these from a GRID by using ActionJavascript and throwing the document to a DIV in a web page.

However, in A5v12 (Alpha Anywhere), the UX LIST component does not have Action Javascript and I haven't been able to construct direct calls to achieve the same end.

I have tried creating an A5W page with a DIV in it (as I did in A5v11) but this has not been successful.

I have tried creating a standalone iFrame. If I set the "iFrame URL" property to a representative value, I can in fact see the PDF but have no means to alter the URL after the initial setup.

Unfortunately I have been unable to use javascript or the {dialog.Object}.setValue() method to adjust "iFrame URL". The setValue method seems to only allow setting the value of simple objects like a textbox.

    Thoughts, methods, magic dust?

    Allan,

The UX list doesn't have Action Javascript itself but it does have access to Action Javascript, see this video

Thanks. I'll review the video shortly. Appreciate the feedback. Will post a working solution when I have it.

There is no need for a button, a list control does have an onclick event (see list properties) that you can use to for example open a pdf

Re: Have UX LIST "onClick" open a PDF

You are correct. I had tried both button and onClick events.

The issue was the ability to launch a PDF in any of:
          • A5W page with a DIV tag (which I have used in A5v11)
          • iFrame control
          • embedded PDF

In theory, all of those are viable options. The specific problems I was having were:
          • the "{dialog.Object}.setValue()" command does not let you sub-specify a URL (for a PDF) in an iFrame
          • Action JavaScript (as I used in A5v11) was not (seemingly) available via a LIST component
          • manual attempts (many and variant) to hand-code or copy-and-modify code from an existing working A5v11 environement for GRIDS were unsuccessful
          • you can't change the target of an embedded PDF
          • and... while I could get a static PDF to display in any form, the display was always only 40% of the screen no matter what

Fortunately a previous comment (thanks to the poster) showed that Action JavaScript is indirectly available if you create a custom function first.

Later I received an even more in-depth video from Selwyn.

I will complete the effort today and post a solution (with all video links) in case someone else finds value in this.

          Thanks for looking in.

Re: Have UX LIST "onClick" open a PDF

                Tom,

I had two solutions... but Selwyn provided me with a video and then posted it to the YouTube channel a day or so later. It resolved my issue and I got off on some other tangents with the code. Recently someone else asked the question (also about using a DIV as a target for PDF display) and I posted the following note:
The trick here is to NOT use a DIV when within a UX. I'm not saying you can't... I tried and had some problems with it (DIV in an A5W page). However, by creating a PANEL and changing its type to "iFrame", you can just throw the PDF at the body of the panel.

                It really does work well.
                • UX Component - List Control
                • Using a List Control to select a PDF File to Display in a Panel Card
                • In this video we show how PDF files can be displayed in a Panel card. The actual pdf to display is controlled by making a selection in a List control.
