Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Email PDF report as attachment

    I'm trying to email a PDF report as an attachment (using version 1507/4150).
    On a UX component I have a send e-mail button which prints a PDF report to Xbasic and then tries to send it as an attachment to an e-mail.
    If I try using the Action Scripting Execute Server Side action, I just get an error message saying that method is not recognised - however if I take the action script Xbasic and use it in the function called after the report is generated, it works fine in that it sends the message body but not the attachment.
    I have another button on the UX to print the report separately and this works fine.
    The report message DIV just shows a "Working" message and then disappears.

    This "problem" has probably been tackled before but it is driving me mad!

      Hi Lee

      I sent details of the problem to Selwyn but he did not come up with an answer - he doubted that there was a bug in the system.
      Now I print the PDF to a file in a user area on my server and then attach that to the e-mail, i.e. I no longer use the "print a PDF report to Xbasic" option.
      It now seems to work consistently and not sporadically as before.
      My reports contain images held as Image Reference fields and I did wonder if this was causing a timing problem within Alpha.
      I hope this helps - if required, I could send you a copy of the script that I use.

        Thank you for responding. I would very much like to see your script. I've been requested to do a billing module where I create the bill as a pdf and then email the bills to the clients.

          Re: Email PDF report as attachment

          Here's an AJAX Callback example that may help. This UX has an email client-like form on it. And it's on a multi-tenant site so the report is filtered by the customerID. The argument for this is in the report data definition, so no need to supply additional filtering here. Also, this report was developed as a freeform layout report. Reference to a layout-table report is just a bit different as it is not contained in the .alb file.

          Code:
          dim args as sql::Arguments
          dim Options as p
          dim printOptions as p
          args.set("blank", "")
          args.set("arg_customerID", session.customerID)
          options.propogateErrors = .t.
          printOptions.blank = ""
          reportname = "[email protected]"
          saveAS = "PDF"
          filter = ""
          order = ""
          filename = Request.GetRequestTempFileName("PDF")
          a5w_report_saveAs(reportName,saveAs,filter,order,filename,global_variables(),printOptions,args,options)

          dim message as P
          message.html_message = e.dataSubmitted.body
          message.to = e.dataSubmitted.to_email
          message.subject = e.dataSubmitted.subject
          message.from = e.dataSubmitted.from_email
          message.from_alias = e.dataSubmitted.from_alias
          message.attachments = filename

          email_send2(message)

            Re: Email PDF report as attachment

            e-mail function attached - it is more verbose than Steve's as the sending code is taken from the "default" Alpha sending routine which includes the ability to use repository settings, etc.
            It also therefore allows you to use HTML markup in the accompanying message.
            The e-mail settings are held in session variables which are set upon user login so as to"personalise" them.

                Thanks Steve, how do you get to the layout-table report since it's not in the .alb file?

                  Code:
                  MyReport@ProjectReport
                  So if your report is "Customers_by_State" it would be:

                  Code:
                  Customers_by_State@ProjectReport
                  -Steve
