Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Working with panels

    Hi All

I have UX component which makes some AJAX callbacks to a database and hides or unhides controls and sets some variables based on the result of the callback. This is working perfectly.

But ... as soon as I wrap it up in a panel for the mobile version, it fails. Has anyone else noticed panels changing things in a similar way?

    Regards,

    Phil

How does it fail? What's it failing on? Could you post a video of it failing or some error messages?

      Re: Working with panels

      Hi David

I have hidden fields that are filled in on entry to the page. Depending on the value of these fields (numeric checkboxes ... essentially flags), containers are either hidden or shown. In these containers are buttons. Buttons are programmatically clicked on entry to the page depending on these checkboxes.

The buttons in the containers also cause these selfsame containers to be hidden or shown by toggling the checkboxes appropriately.

What the buttons do is call an AJAX callback to interrogate an MSSQL database and the flags are set based on the resultset of that query and a record may be added or deleted as well.

Essentially, this is a subscription thing. Two buttons per subscription ... one to add to the subscription and one to remove from the subscription in a pair of 'paired' containers ... toggling which is shown or hidden depending on whether a record exists or not. Click the Subscribe button and an AJAX callback is made to add a record, the Subscribe container is closed and the Unsubscribe container is shown ... and vice versa with a deletion of the record if unsubscribing.

This all works fine. Until I wrap it in panels and then it doesn't. I have three button pairs and one of them works and the other two don't, yet the same callbacks are being made with an without the panels. No error message seems to be fired. So I can't show you that. Without sending you the whole app, I can't really just upload the UX component itself to examination as it relies on session variables being set and the list from the previous (calling) web page and login variables etc.

      Does that elucidate any better?

      Regards,

      Phil

        Re: Working with panels

Are you using sub-components and panel navigators? If so, make sure the name of the panel navigators in the child components are different than the parent navigator. This is especially important if you used the quick panel genie to setup the parent and child panes. It defaults to the same name each time which creates an issue where the child components won't display.

          Hi Greg,

No ... the page in question is actually pretty much HTML only. There is a UX component on it with a bunch of hidden fields that then go into a freeform container which I use to display the majority of the page, and then the buttons/containers in question. There is also a map component there as well. Essentially, this shows an advert to a user which is displayed in the freeform container and the user should be able to save the advert to their account as one of three things ... subscribe to the advert itself, subscribe to the adverts from the company advertising, or subscribe to the category of adverts ... using those pesky buttons. But I will have a look again at wrapping the code in panels again making sure the names are different ... but this one UX component is the only thing in the a5w page.

          Thanks, Greg,

          Phil

PS Did that email from a button thing work ok for you in the end?

            Re: Working with panels

Hey Phil....sorry I can't be of more help on the panel issue. I know I experienced problems related to the conflicting names, etc. when using sub-components.....was hoping that was the issue for you since I have "been there and done that."

My apologies for not following up on the solution to the email/button request I had. Your code worked perfectly:
            {dialog.object}.closeWindow(this)
            var src = 'mailto:'+urlencode({dialog.object}.getValue('EMAIL'));
            window.location.href = src;
The only thing I had to do was to make sure the EMAIL field was in the panel and hidden. That allowed me to use the "Email <>"" show/hide expression on the button. Now it works great....button only appears if they have entered an email address and clicking the button calls up the new email window with the email address pre-entered. Thanks for your code!!!

            Greg

              Re: Working with panels

              Hi Greg,

Glad you got it figured out. I often find googling 'Javascript send email' will bring up some good stuff ... stack overflow is also a good source of things like this.

I'll keep working on the panel thing ... for now, I just use a page that is themed like a panel, and that works ok for now. But I'll get back to it at a later point when I have other more pressing things done!

              Thanks for chipping in,

              Phil

                Phil,

I understand the concept of what you're doing but without the components and seeing what actually is happening it's a tough one to figure out. If you wanted to send it to me I'm happy to have a look. Here's my unencoded email: rune dot dkates at rogers dot com

                    Re: Working with panels

Well, it seems that there is some variability using Android browsers. I do get different results with different browsers. Thanks so very much to David for working through some of the issues with me on this.

What I have found is that if you open a menu as shown using the SLILDEMENU technique shown in the tutorial video, I had to click on the list twice to activate a menu choice ... unless I had a header in the window and then it worked fine.

Hiding fields seems flaky too. I also had a google map that was being displayed in a popup window based on hidden latitude and longitude variables which worked ok outside of a panel, and then in the panel I had to unhide them and put them in a hidden container instead.

Hopefully this will help someone in the future!

Once again, thanks to David for his kindness.
