Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Serious Problem With File Download Feature?

When using a file download feature per video D45, the downloaded file opens in read-only mode!
    http://www.ajaxvideotutorials.com/V1...leDownload.swf

So I set up a file download feature in the same fashion as the above video to download an Excel file from a folder.
The file is downloaded and opens in Excel but the file is changed to Read-Only. You cannot edit the file.

It is not a permissions issue unless Alpha is modifying the permissions. I can open the same file directly from the folder and it does not open in Read-Only mode and can be edited.
Something strange is taking place because with each download, Alpha is appending a number to the filename.
For example, the filename is Test.xlsm but when you download the file, with each successive download it becomes Test-1.xlsm, Test-2.xlsm, and so on.

You can even see this happen in the file that Selwyn is downloading in the video above. His file is called invoice.pdf, but when the file downloads and opens in acrobat reader, it is called invoice[1].pdf.

Why is this happening and how can this be prevented? I need to be able to edit the downloaded file.

Re: Serious Problem With File Download Feature?

Turns out that the editing problem was due to Protected Mode settings. Excel and Word do not like files that are opened from an internet location and have Protected Mode settings turned on by default.
Turning off these settings in Trust Center fixes that issue.

However, the file renaming thing still exists and is really annoying. This happens not just with Excel but also with Word documents. Here is an example:

The file is called 21A Test.docx and this is the file prompted to open
    File Download MsgBox.JPG

When the file is opened, notice that the name has been changed to 21A Test[1].docx.
    Word Document Filename.JPG

This means the user needs to do a Save As and modify the filename instead of a Save in order to save the original file rather than a copy.

The appending of the [1] is not an alpha thing. it is just the way the osor the browser handles saving of files when there is one there already. I guess someone thought that it was a good idea not to ask the overwrite question whenever you downloaded something. Years ago it use to ask you whether you wanted to overwrite the file. If you are using firefox and go to options/general and check always ask me where to save files, this will give you that behavior (Like doing save as, in IE) and not append the [1], [2] etc...I have god knows how many alpha patch files that are named like this, because that is the way the os/browsers work.

Ah, is that what's going on, thanks for that insight Bill.

This file download from a browser is getting pretty frustrating.
I'm now experiencing .xlsx files that are "locked for editing" after they have been previously opened. Even though the file is closed, the browser is holding the file state as open somewhere. Grrr
Doesn't happen with .docx files though.

I might have to take another look at my approach here.

Locked for editing does not refer to file being open, it means Excel knows it came from internet and therefor may be unsafe. Select it's Properties / General & click on unlock.

Hi Frank, thanks for the suggestion. I have turned off Protected View which means the browser is supposed to disregard that the file came from the internet.
As for the file itself, there is no lock on the properties, as you see here:
            File Properties.JPG

It appears that the browser is locking the file, not Excel, as the problem can be cleared by clearing the browser cache. Not an ideal situation, but I guess I can deal with it now that I know about it.
I've made a quick video to demonstrate the problem, this should make it a little more clear what is happening:

Is there any different behavior if you close the file in excel? Not close excel, but first file/close then close excel?

I just tried that Bill but it makes no difference, the file is still locked second time around.

Probably something I am just going to have to live with.

This is not Alpha related http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...-internet-link

When you simply "open" the document from a browser or mail attachment the browser/mail program will save a temporary read-only version and feed that into the associated application. You must not edit this since you can not know where this online content has been stored and temporary files will be deleted on reboot anyway.

So you're better off saving the file instead of opening it.

Frank, no I get that now. What I wanted to do was have the user open the file, modify it, then Save NOT Save As. Looks like it's not possible as I envisioned it.
                    Thanks.
