Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Thanks Alpha for Video About Putting Search Part In A Window

    I want to give a shout out to Alpha and Selwyn for the video about putting a grid search part in a window:
    http://www.ajaxvideotutorials.com/V1...chInWindow.swf

    The concepts in that video gave me some other ideas about cleaning up the appearance of my grids and I am thrilled! Here is a short video by me about that:
    http://screencast.com/t/1aLYdRYhvxy

    In case anyone is curious, here is the master template that goes with my video (the feedback div is used to display some wait messages):
    Code:
    <font size="3"><b>Vendors List</b></font>
    <div id="feedback"></div>
    {ActionButton:SEARCHWINDOW}
    &nbsp;&nbsp;{ActionButton:REPORTSWINDOW}
    &nbsp;&nbsp;{ActionButton:LABELSWINDOW}
    &nbsp;&nbsp;{ActionButton:BLANKINFOFORM}
    &nbsp;&nbsp;{ActionButton:AUDIT}
    <div id = "search">
    {grid.Search_Part}
    </div>
    <div id = "reports">
    Based on Search Results<br><br>
    {ActionButton:VENDORCONTACTSPREAD}<br><br>
    {ActionButton:VENDORSBYCOSTCODE}<br><br>
    {ActionButton:VENDORTERMSEXPLIST}<br><br>
    {ActionButton:VENDORS1099INFO}<br><br>
    </div>
    <div id = "labels">
    Based on Search Results<br><br>
    {ActionButton:LABELSVENDORNAME}<br><br>
    {ActionButton:MAILLABELSWITHRETURN}<br><br>
    {ActionButton:MAILLABELSNORETURN}<br><br>
    </div>
    {grid.Grid_Part}{grid.DetailView_Part}

    It never ceases to amaze me what can be done with Alpha

    And thanks to you Carol for pointing out Selwyn's video as well as your own template & video. I really like this, I plan on taking a closer look for my own grids.

      Re: Thanks Alpha for Video About Putting Search Part In A Window

      I'd like to retain the Quick Search in my grid and have the dropdown div for the advanced search but can't figure out how to put the div in-line with the Quick search.

      Search Button.JPG

      Anybody know how to do it?

        Thanks for sharing Carol. Very nice work. I might need that technique in the future.

          I have a silly question (my specialty) :)
          how did you get this video..
          I am able to access the youtube channel only and I hate it... I prefer the old swf files but I lost them after alpha changed their website..

          Thanks

              Paul, I spotted that video here: http://downloads.alphasoftware.com/A...easenotes.html

              I don't think the video is on one of the pages Peter posted. It has been a bit tough for me to figure out where videos can be found. They seem to be in multiple places.

                It could be that the video is on the pre release notes page because they won't be posting 'pre-release' videos to the official video page until they do another official release.

                    Re: Thanks Alpha for Video About Putting Search Part In A Window

                    I just learned an important lesson about using divs on my grids that are displayed in a tabbed ui. If I use the same div name (like the name search), on each grid, then IF I open 2 different grids under tabs in the tabbed ui, the 2nd one displays all the stuff in the divs WITHOUT clicking a button to open the window with the divs. Is quite a mess. So I changed the names of my divs to make them unique and solved the issue.

                      Re: Thanks Alpha for Video About Putting Search Part In A Window

                      From Selwyn regarding the unique div names I mentioned in previous post:

                      yes, that's why all object names in a component are prefixed with the alias. that makes them unique.
                      so, in your master template you could have named the div the contained the search part
                      <div id="{grid.componentname}_SEARCHINWINDOW"></div>
                      if you look at the div names that are generated by the component they all follow this pattern.
                      at runtime, the {grid.componentName} placeholder is replaced with the real component alias, which is unique.
                      As a result, my code for the Master Template given above in a previous post has now changed to:
                      Code:
                      <div id="feedback"></div>
                      <font size="3"><b>Vendors List</b></font>
                      &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;{ActionButton:SEARCHWINDOW}
                      &nbsp;&nbsp;{ActionButton:REPORTSWINDOW}
                      &nbsp;&nbsp;{ActionButton:LABELSWINDOW}
                      &nbsp;&nbsp;{ActionButton:BLANKINFOFORM}
                      &nbsp;&nbsp;{ActionButton:AUDIT}
                      <div id="{grid.componentname}_SEARCHWINDOW">
                      {grid.Search_Part}
                      </div>
                      <div id="{grid.componentname}_REPORTSWINDOW">
                      Based on Search Results<br><br>
                      {ActionButton:VENDORCONTACTSPREAD}<br><br>
                      {ActionButton:VENDORSBYCOSTCODE}<br><br>
                      {ActionButton:VENDORTERMSEXPLIST}<br><br>
                      {ActionButton:VENDORS1099INFO}<br><br>
                      </div>
                      <div id="{grid.componentname}_LABELSWINDOW">
                      Based on Search Results<br><br>
