Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    location of security dbf tables

Under the 'Web Security' there is 'Users and Groups' setup icon - if I add a new user from here the new user value is saved in the following location:
    C:\A5Webroot\AlphaProjects3\MYPROJECT1.WebProjects\Default.WebProject\websecurity_users.dbf

From the new register - if new user is added the value is saved in the following location:
    C:\A5Webroot\AlphaProjects3\websecurity_users.dbf

I "added" this table (and other security tables) in the Control Panel Tables/Sets [File > Add Table/Set...] using the C:\A5Webroot\AlphaProjects3\MYPROJECT1.WebProjects\Default.WebProject\websecurity_users.dbf location.

When I bind the values in the new register component - are the value of the file dbf location not taken from the Control Panel Tables/Sets that I "added" above?

    Thanks!

Re: location of security dbf tables

Let me make my question simpler:
Under the 'Web Security' there is 'Users and Groups' setup icon - if I add a new user, websecurity_users.dbf table gets a new row.
Question: If I physically move this table to a new location - where will I update the setup so that above utility will now start looking/updating this table at the new location?
    Thanks!

Re: location of security dbf tables

If you are using the native dbf security tables, they will exist in at least 2 places.
      • There is a local copy in your project. These are the tables that are updated by the Users and Groups genie opened by the Web security menu in the project. The security groups defined here are available in the various builders.
      • There is a second copy that is published to the application webroot folder. This copy is NOT accessible from the desktop (assuming you are using dbf). Any changes made by any running web component (such as the login component or a UX component) are only saved to these tables. This is the data used by the components and pages when running the published project.

If you add or change a user on the desktop, the change only exists in the local project security tables

If you add or change a user using a web form (such as a UX component), the change only exists in the tables in the published webroot.

The normal way to work with these is to create all of the security groups you may need and a basic list of users using the desktop Users and Groups genie before publishing anything to the final webroot. This will make all of the security groups available in the builders for components and pages, and should have at least one administrative user for testing. The first time a project is published, the publish process will ask to publish the web security tables to the final location. This will make the security data available to the published project.

If you want to change the security data on the server after the first publish, you have a couple options. The first critical point is that when you publish any security data from the local project, you overwrite all of the data on the server. If you allow any changes from any component running on the server, such as allowing users to change their password or user name, or even add users with a web form, you must get that data back to the local project before making any changes. In this instance, follow these steps.
      1. Open the local Users and Groups dialog and select the "Import / Export Users"
      2. If you are using dbf tables, one of the options is to "Import User information From Server"
      3. Select this option and select the publish profile that was used to publish the tables originally
      4. After the security data imports, make your changes in the Users and Groups dialog
      5. Then immediately republish the revised web security data tables

Note: The republish will overwrite all of the data on the server. If any user makes a change between the time you import for the server and republish back to the server, those changes will be lost. Therefore, this should be done quickly, and only at a time when it is unlikely anyone will make any changes using any web form

If you don't allow users to make any changes using a web form and don't allow users to change their password in the login component, the data on the server should never change. In that case (and only that case), the data on the server will match the local data. So you could make the changes locally, and just publish.

To repeat. When you publish any security data from the local project, you overwrite all of the data on the server

So be very careful about publishing security data and only publish when you are absolutely sure you can overwrite the data without breaking the application

          jerry

          that was wonderful.
it took me a whole week to figure that one by trial and error method.
i do have one other question, not related to the original post. if you think this should be on a separate thread and if you are able to please move this one to a new thread.
my web security configuration says that the password be encrypted using a phrase randomly generated by alphafive. and when i add the user with web interface and go to my mysql table the password is clearly seen.
what shall i do to accomplish the intent?
          thanks for reading

Re: location of security dbf tables

How are you adding the user on the web? If you use the supplied security functions to save data, the system will encrypt the password using the same key set in the security settings

i used the dialog and the save method from the template add new security user.
and used the save method that came with the template.
