Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Why does alpha 5 web hosting cost so much?

I have over 100 sites with host gator in a few accounts i have had most of them for over 8 years now and none of them cost even close to when it looks like it cost to run one alpha 5 site WHY?? dose it cost so much more to host a alpha 5 site.

Adding everything up it just keeps costing more and more to even make and run a basic app.

I assume you are talking about hosting on ZebraHost or GoDaddy with a MS SQL or MySQL backend. If you already own the Application Server (Subscription or Purchase), why don't you host the sites yourself? MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server Express are FREE. The MS SQL Server Express allows for databases for up to 10 Gigabytes.

I have hosted my own websites for years. I am currently running the last 2 releases, V11 and Anywhere on the same server. I probably have up to 100 Users at the maximum, and my server is about 2 years old with dual xeon processors, 16 Gigs Ram and a RAID 5, 1TB, SSD Data Drive. I am currently working on a project that will be selling products and using PayPal for payments. While that site (hopefully) will have a lot of traffic, it should be short interactions. My current users log into their sites, and stay logged in all day, so usage patterns will be different.

I use www.powweb.com to register the domain name, and then forward the domain to my server. For instance, www.mydomain.com points to my server which has a static IP, such as http://104.132.12.174:82/mydomain. I use port 82 for V11, and port 83 for V12. Powweb offers unlimited email addresses for your domain and it does work with the Application Server email configuration. They even offer webmail. While the webmail is not branded with a jpg, you do access it by going to mail.yourdomain.com. Powweb does offer MySQL and VPN Services, I just don't use them so I have no experience with those.

If you do not have a static IP available, you can use a dynamic DNS site such as www.dyn.com. They offer a FREE version where you can have 5 free DNS. You install the DYN Client on your server and if your IP changes, it will automatically be updated. Before I had a static IP, I used Dyn to make sure my IP was automatically updated.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask. I feel better knowing I control all aspects of the sites, from SQL Backups, to VMWare backups, etc. I use SQLBackup&FTP for my scheduled SQL Backups, and I use VMWare Converter to backup my VM's each week. It might be a control thing, but I am used to it and it works for me.

I would be worried about down time and slow time on my local internet connection if i hosted it. blackouts and some slows times of the day access. Plus i would be afraid to take off for a few days or weeks??

      Thanks for the info

I agree with your concerns. But I have 100 Meg down, 25 Meg up, main internet connection. I use a DLink Dual WAN Router and I also have DSL as a backup pipe just in case. When both pipes are up, they are bonded for additional speed, if one pipe goes down, the other one takes over.

I have an APC UPS for Battery Backup, and a 10000 watt backup generator with automatic failover. The Generator is tested each month and can use either Natural Gas, Propane or Gasoline. The generator came in handy when Hurricane Sandy hit the Northeast. While I had power, both internet pipes did go down until power was returned 7 days later. For that week I used a 4G Router from DLink, which did work, but internet speed was impeded during this time. Fortunately for me (If you can use that term), all but 1 of my clients had power so while it was not ideal, it did work and all of the prep work prior to the storm was worth it.

While my upcoming project is going to be a retail situation which might call for 99.999% uptime, my uptime has been 99.9%. I take down the server once a month on a Saturday Night (I Don't Have A Life!) for VM Backups. While I can do this while they are live, I feel better doing it when they are off. If the retail site takes off like the client expects it to, I will move it to a VPN which should cost about $30 a month from Powweb.

Re: Why does alpha 5 web hosting cost so much?

Maybe, but I also gain many things with this setup. I learn new things about servers all the time. Clients pay me monthlies and not hosting companies and I have power and internet for myself, family & neighbors if an emergency occurs.

I am also responsible for a clients server setup in a major Data Center in NYC. Today they had a major outage of over an hour. It was due to a power spike coming into the center. It fried alot of companies equipment. We had a UPS along with a PDU (Power Distribution Unit) so we were OK once their internet pipe was restored. But we were one of the lucky ones.

So all in all, since I am only responsible for a few sites right now, the fees I have collected more than paid for my setup, so I think I am ahead, but I could be wrong.
