Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Web Security DBF SQL?

if someone is using sql as database backend, why cannot they simply use the native dbf websecurity tables instead of creating all the active link tables and match the fields names to the dbf field names.
it looks like you can create new user just as easy in dbf as in sql without all the extra steps.
can anyone explain the advantage of sql websecurity tables over dbf files?

sorry, this should be in general questions section.

    Re: Web Security DBF SQL?

I've been happy doing this for a while with one of my apps. I had so much to do so quickly and such a workload, using the .dbf was just faster and easier.

But, now that we're about to get a 2nd web server plus put the database on its own dedicated database server, going to SQL security tables is a necessity.

      why?

i find it way easy to use just the dbf.
i played around with sql tables. i was not happy at all. the tables when looked around using the tools on the top menu shows one thing and when looked directly in the mysql data they were different. double clicking the active link tables were similar to the mysql tables.
so i think just staying with dbf will be lot easier. at least for me.
i just wanted to know from others what they think.

        Re: Web Security DBF SQL?

        Answering your question "why":

If I have a load balancer, two web servers and a separate database server, there needs to be some common web security tables. Imagine if web server A had its tables, and web server B has its tables. When one gets a new or updated user, how does it get to the other server?

While I won't be surprised if someone adds a message here with some scheme to allow the two servers, on opposite sides of the globe, to see and share a common dbf, it makes much more sense to make use of the common SQL database, and just put the tables in one place, with the rest of the SQL data.

are you able to add sql tables easily and meet all the requirements without any problem?
          is migration easy?
does password encryption on the sql table works well?

            Re: Web Security DBF SQL?

My answer may be redundant here so you may ignore.
There are always two aspects in any application.

            1. The Program files - Includes the Web Server Configuration, Setup files and program files. --> This changes less often (Call it the File Server Side)
            2. The Data files - Includes the user data (customer, invoice, table, etc.) AND the security tables (user/password). --> This changes on daily bases (Call it the Database Side).

Life is simple - Database server is backed up nighty or more often because user tables (invoice, customer, user, password data is/may be updated everyday) - File Server is backed up less often (unless you tweak/play with the code/program/setup every day) - may be weekly or monthly.

If we use the dbf files for security, those will not be in the Database, but resides on the Web server File Server or other other designated File Server.

Now life is no longer simple - you have to backup both the Database Server and all or part of the File Server for security data on daily basis.

            Thanks!

              Re: Web Security DBF SQL?

              Hi Mr. Workings,

When I moved my application from native Alpha Five tables to MySQL tables I'm having a problem with the security system. The security login form is referencing data stored in native Alpha Five tables for verification of User Name and Password. But my security maintenance dialogs and grids are hooked up to MySQL tables. How do I tell the login.a5wcmp to look at the MySQL websecurity_users table instead of the Alpha Five table?

              Thank you for your help,

              CPGood
