Thanks so much Selwyn. The only reason I used action javascript was to force the actions to fire synchronously. I agree this is not needed for such simple javascript. I did try the code you provided above and the problem is that the xbasic is firing before the row gets focus. In my specific case, the xbasic that fires contains a SQL insert statement that gets its values from controls in the list's detail view. This makes having focus on the correct row critical. So, I guess the questions is, how do I force the xbasic to fire after the row is selected using in-line javascript?

i don't understand your comment. you used javascript actions and you checked the 'run actions synchronously' box, but what you did was meaningless since the two actions you have were

1. some inline javascript
2. an ajax callback

the inline javascript will always run before the ajax callback is triggered.

the 'run actions synchronously' box only has meaning when you have multiple actions EACH of which does an ajax callback -- this is not the situation that you have.

once you get rid of the javascript action and you put all of the code in the buttons on click event as shown below:

l.setValue(rowNumber);
alert('you clicked on ' + rowNumber + ' and we have now given focus to this row');
{dialog.object}.ajaxCallback('','','setvalue','','',{deviceOfflineFunction: function() {   }});

then the row you clicked on will have focus before the callback happens. if it does not, then just put the callback in a setTimeout()

How Can I resolve for a grid component? I have a button that opens a form for editing but first sees what value a column has in order to open the correct form. Heres my button OnClick event:
