Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Executing Actions Synchronously

I have an OK button click event which closes a modal window and then refreshes a list control. The refresh in turn does an ajax callback to read data from a RESTful service and returns with new data which gets refreshed in the list control. Everything works fine except that the modal window does not disappear until the ajax callback returns and begins updating the list control. I have a wait message which is hidden behind the modal window so the user is left staring at the modal window wondering what is happening because the window does not close until the ajax callback returns. I checked the checkbox at the bottom of the Action Javascript list to run each action synchronously, but I get the same behavior no matter what. There are two action javascript routines - one to hide the modal window and the other is an in-line Javascript which has one line of code to refresh the list control.

I'm not sure why I have never come across this situation before, but apparently this is the first time I have closed a modal dialog and immediately made an ajax callback to refresh data. It might take 5 seconds before the callback returns so I would like the user to know its doing something by seeing the wait message with animation. I could probably throw a second wait message up on top of the modal but it would not be as clean as if the modal window disappeared immediately and then made the ajax callback.

    Thanks

The following line of code seems to work well in Live Preview mode, but I'm not certain if the delay time will be okay for every platform and browser:

    setTimeout(function() {{Dialog.Object}.ajaxCallback('','','MyXbasicFunction')},1000);

      Hi,

I'm not sure I fully understand your issue however you might also want to check out the fantastic new A5.executeThisThenThat() function in the release notes.

      Cheers

        Re: Executing Actions Synchronously

Thanks Peter. My modal window would not immediately close after clicking the Close button because it was performing a time-consuming ajax callback to refresh the list behind the modal window. The modal window hides the wait message so the user would think the system was not responding.

The first thing I tried was A5.executeThisThenThat() to first hide the window and then execute the ajax callback, but it did not work. Apparently, some lag time is needed for the browser to update the window. I also tried changing my Javascript code to Action Javascript routines and checking the "Run actions synchronously" checkbox. It did not work either because it to just calls A5.executeThisThenThat().

The short delay caused by setTimeout is the only thing I have been able to do that will give the window the time to close and refresh the screen before making the ajax callback.
