Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

V12 Release Notes in PDF Format with embedded Bookmarks and Table Of Contents

I always like to print out the release notes (my HP Color Laserjet does a nice job, then I mark them up with my notes, diagrams, scribbles, etc.), but I hate wasting time thumbing through the pages to find exactly what I'm looking for. As such, I converted the HTML file to a PDF file and added a TOC and embedded bookmarks. I initially added a few links in the TOC but bookmarks are MUCH easier in Adobe Acrobat so that's the way I decided to go. I've tested on my MacBook Pro and my iPad (in iBooks) which lets you easily get to the bookmarks and use the links to quickly navigate the document . Your mileage may vary on a Windows machine.

    Hope you find it useful.

    Hi Bob,
This is fantastic, I have been trying to work out how I could do this for an age, this is perfect on my e-reader (Kobo Arc).

Thanks very much for posting this. Can I be cheeky and ask if there will be updates with each release or can you let me know how you did it.

    Regards
    Andy

Re: V12 Release Notes in PDF Format with embedded Bookmarks and Table Of Contents

Thanks for the feedback guys ...

As far as I'm concerned, it certainly makes sense to include all of the updates and future release notes in bookmarked PDF format so I will talk to Selwyn and see what we can do about that.

I've noticed that when using Chrome in my Windows 7 VM on my Macbook Pro that Chrome includes a very basic PDF viewer that does not show the bookmarks. If you want to use the bookmarks on a desktop machine running Chrome (and you should), you need to follow these steps:

        1. Fire up Chrome and install the Adobe Acrobat Reader
        See http://get.adobe.com/reader/

        2. Disable the built-in PDF viewer.
        See http://blogs.adobe.com/vikrant/2010/...google-chrome/

Now when you load a PDF file into Chrome you will be using the full Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Just click on the bookmarks icon in the upper left corner and you'll see all of the bookmarks which will allow you to navigate to each specific topic.

As far as how I created this bookmarked PDF document ...

First I simply printed out the release notes as a PDF file.

        To create the TOC
I created a Word document and cut and pasted the topics from the PDF file to the Word document and just entered the page numbers.
Then I printed that to a PDF file.

To create the final PDF file
I used Adobe Acrobat Pro and merged the two files and then went through the complete document and bookmarked each topic. This is very easy to do in Acrobat.

We'll have to automate this as much as possible in the future.

I hope they also put the old html version available as before. It works also great. I do not want to download pdf all the time.

Not to worry, the HTML version will not go away.

The PDF's will originate from the HTML docs, so you will always have a choice.

As I built the PDF file, the links (say to a video) within the PDF document aren't active so you currently will want to use the HTML version for all the links. I know the current release of Acrobat Pro can consume HTML so in the future I will try to build a similar document by consuming the HTML first, that should maintain the links.

Thanks, Bob. I'm about to fly cross country, so I downloaded this to my iPad. Now, if I could download the videos in bulk ......
