Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Domain Setup for Multiple Clients

    Hi,

    I am new to developing for a web environment and I am wondering how the Application Server on a VPS works with multiple clients.

    Say I have 3 clients each with their own applications and domains.

    Client #1 --> www.domain1.com
    Client #2 --> www.domain2.com
    Client #3 --> www.domain3.com

    Do I need a VPS for each client? Or can I upload the applications to their domains and link back to the VPS where my SQL server and application server are?

    Thanks,

    Blair

    Re: Domain Setup for Multiple Clients

    From my experience...
    You can have them running on the same VPS.
    However I would advise you to have a separate Alpha Anywhere Application Server (AAAS) instance running for each of your clients.
    If each of your clients have different IP addresses, then you can bind each IP Address to the corresponding AAAS instance
    (look at the "Advanced" tab in Application Server Settings)
    Otherwise you can use the same IP but run each instance on different ports.

    Now the reason I run separate instances is so that your client applications do not share the same Session ID/data...which in the past has caused problems for me.
    This config has proven to be stable for me.

    Hope this helps.

      Bind every instance of the WAS to a different IP address, so you have to order extra ip addresses from your provider. Be careful though: the configuration info is written into an xml file. If you only have 1 configuration file then it will not work as all instances share the same configfile. That is why you can specify which configfile to use:

      C:\Program Files (x86)\a5V12 ApplicationServer\A5ApplicationServer.exe -CONFIGFILE=C:\A5v12Configs\Staging\ApplicationServerConfig-Staging.xml

      This example instructs this instance to use the configfile in C:\A5v12Configs\Staging\ApplicationServerConfig-Staging.xml

      So for each instance you want a different configfile

      Alwaysup supports this very well so you can easily run 4 instances on one VPS with just 4 gig of memory (obviously depends on the load you are going to have on the instances)

        Great Frank,
        Just to clarify:
        Your definition of 4 instances is where WAS is installed only once but executed 4 times with each execution having its own config file ?
