Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Odd Table/Database question

I know this sounds odd but I thought I would ask it anyways, and I also want to point out that I am not sure why I do it - but I do.
I have an external database (MySQL) hosted on a VPS (Godadday) and I manage the database through Plesk. I create tables, define types, etc there.

What I want to know is why do I use the Import Genie to have a local copy? Is it important to have a local copy of the database in dbf form? I use the connection string for grids and UX components. I just added 5 new tables in MySQL to accommodate an estimating idea I have and wonder why I am bothering to update the control panel with a local correct set of tables. What purpose does it serve and why bother? me, I just do it.

BTW my site is live at www.nwcopro.com
a work in progress its usable at this point!

    Thanks!
I have struggled to get this far - thanks to alpha 5 I have though and a few months ago I was ready to give up!

    Re: Odd Table/Database question

I don't know why you need a local copy of the MySQL tables (also why you need vps, isn't that expensive?) you can just leave the MySQL there and reach it from alpha without any problem. with the new dialog components you can actually create a table there. you can continue the way you manage MySQL but definitely you can do all sorts of things with connection string, no need for local copy( except when you are dealing with security, the tables will be defined as active link table but alpha updates directly as far as I know)

    (not connected to this but
did you see the answer to your show/hid expression for multiselect field)

      Re: Odd Table/Database question

Hey, I did see your response to the other question and thank you for taking the time then and now to respond. I wanted to check on your solution but I did find another solution based on creating an additional table. I wanted to test your idea and then respond in that other thread but time and necessity caused me to put effort into other areas. I will check it out and post in response hopefully to help others.
In regards to this thread though, I have a VPS to be able to install and run the server in an environment where I will host and sell my app. Currently the app will sit inside an additional folder, be identical to all yet hit different databases - all hosted on my vps so that why I have it. I guess I cold run it all locally but I feel its just easier to pay someone else to setup and host a server with all the necessary things on it ot set up unlimited MySQL databases and reliably serve it up 24/7
Thanks again for all of your time and responses!
      Your thoughts are much appreciated!
