Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Scalability of the Alpha Anywhere Application Server

    Hello,

On behalf of those of us that need to deal with scale (i.e. thousands of concurrent users), is anywhere aware of an official Alpha position on performance
of their application server under load?

I know there are many variables regarding the server HW, the application code, etc.. - but there must be some way of modeling/predicting the number of concurrent users that the app server can handle. I noticed that the annual license is based on 10 or 20 concurrent users. This is really low and makes the environment relatively useless for most mobile applications.

    Thanks,
    Bill

search the forum for "concurrent". You'll find lots of these discussions have already occurred. Nothing (significant) changed between the WAS on v11 and Alpha Anywhere, and though they're moving toward an IIS plugin model, all a5w pages/callbacks will presumably still be running through the WAS-turned-IIS-plugin.

I know that there is no official position on this. You can get an idea of cost for higher user counts by reviewing pricing on zebrahost.net for Alpha servers configured for high load.

        Thanks Steve.

It looks like it starts at $1000/month for 200 concurrent users. I don't think the financial math will work out for my app, so I have to bite the bullet and port to web2py and Sencha

The Alpha Application Server (4 core license version) can be run with 4 instances and costs $99 per month or $1000 per year

Depending on the nature of the application, each instance should be able to support between 40 and 150 concurrent users

You can use multiple licenses behind a load balancer to scale - we offer consulting to help developers determine the optimum configurarion. Also there is volume pricing on multiple server licenses

Re: Scalability of the Alpha Anywhere Application Server

            Hi Bill,

I have personally built and worked on some pretty large Alpha applications that can handle a large volume of users, although I have to admit they did not have thousands of concurrent users (in my case it was hundreds).

I've worked with Zebrahost on getting this all set up (as well as my clients) and Zebrahost have the basic architecture pretty much figured out for scalable site. You basically have a load balancer with multiple alpha instances behind it and then the database behind that. They have found if SSL is required it's best to put it on the load balancer.

Let's assume you have a pretty intensive application so each instance can only support 50 concurrent users. With one Alpha license of $1000 you get four instances on a hyper V server for example which would run you about $200 a month.

So on a monthly basis it would cost about $280 (server plus license) to support 200 concurrent power users or a $1.40 per user per month.

This is just a rough guide of course but I think it's within the ballpark and would allow you to extrapolate based on the type of application you plan to build. Even if you build your new site with free tools most of the costs will be about the same because you're still going to need the server and alpha licensing costs only represent about 27% of the total monthly cost. Plus you need to factor in the savings that alpha provides by allowing you to create your application that much faster.

If you plan to charge for your application then on a per user basis a couple bucks a using seems pretty reasonable, but if you're going to build a free site that is advertising driven I guess you need to save money wherever you can. But I would still cost out the "true cost" of using other tools.

            Cheers,

            Scott

That's a really good answer Scott. Thanks.
