Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Report Builder: Is there a way to accomplish this type of layout in the A5 report builder?

I've attached a pdf that shows the report. I can easily do this in SSRS but the application I built for the data entry portion of it is in Alpha and I'd like Alpha to be a holistic approach if possible. In SSRS I would create a "master" report and then use subreports which can be tied to a different data set and still linked to the master by passing a parameter. It looks like you can only work with a single datasource in Alpha and that's an issue if the child records have more than one record for each parent record as it creates duplicate daily and weekly totals.

    Hello Josh,
Have you tried the linked reports facility?

That is the functionality I was hoping to find although I am running into some problems with using it. I cannot get my freeform report to render properly when viewing it as a linked report, parts of the report are falling off the page even though I have merged all columns and have re sized it to fit across the entire detail region. I also lose my pie chart and some of the data is missing and wrong also. I am including a link to a video I recorded showing you the problem. Any feedback is appreciated! If I can get this to work properly it will be such a great asset.

That report is not difficult. (per your pdf)...

You need to make some calculated fields - one for each day's column

Then sort on the name and use a footer at name to subtotal each day. drag the calc field to the footer and chose total.

          ie

          Monday = if(cdow(<yourdate>)="Monday",<yourcountfield>,0)

Al, I don't have an issue creating the calculated value. My issue is that when I try to use the linked report facility and generate the report via a linked report it does not produce the same results as when I run it directly. Do you have any experience with linked report in alpha?

If you are using SQL it is very easy to build this type of report in a view. I have three reports like this and they work great.

                  Lee,

I don't see how you do this with a view. Maybe your database is structured differently but I would receive a ton of duplicate records if I tried to use a view for it.

It would be something like this:

                    Select
                    [ColumnDescrip],
Mon = (Select count(*) from [database] where DatePart(dw,GetDate()) = 2),
Tue = (Select count(*) from [database] where DatePart(dw,GetDate()) = 3),
Wed = (Select count(*) from [database] where DatePart(dw,GetDate()) = 4),
Thu = (Select count(*) from [database] where DatePart(dw,GetDate()) = 5),
                    from
                    [YourDataBase]
