Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    global function from onclick

hi everyone.. I really need your help.. I have wrote a global function and class. The global function takes in two parameters. (userID and userPW). I am passing this along to the global function and desiring it does its varification with the database and then return a .T. or .F. which then I need to triggers other containers to show or hide. I having such a difficult time just doing the following
    1. accessing my global function
    2. the two variable is on two text control, so I passed that in the parameters.
    3. when I go to the onClick event of the button, there are two options to place actions under the click event.. one by using action Javascript
which does not allow me to check for if that global function return a .T. or .F. or send in parameters for that matter
4 the other choice is textmode, but when I place codes to call for the global function with parameter the buttons becomes really small and then I get a script error.

does anyone have done this before and have perhaps an example code I can refer to.
thank you in advance for any assistance.

Re: local function question - where does value go

    Hi Stan,
I really need your help. I have wrote a good size global function that takes in two character parameters. then I have a button on the component of a web app that suppose to take the value of the two text control and pass it to the global variable.
    1. I don't know to to even obtain the value from the text controls and pass it to my global function that suppose to return .T. or .F.
    2. in the onclick event of the button, in the textmode, I don't know what the syntax looks like to do #1 and then call the global function
    ie. if global_function(param1, param2) = .T. then
Here I want to show containers and hide others (this I believe I got it from action Java scripting)
    end if

please help.. I am in desperate need of advice and mentoring.. thanks in advance for your assistance.

Re: Functions - how far to go with them?

You need to make an Ajax Callback (use Action Javascript in the Onclick Event of the button). Create an Xbasic function in your component that contains the two text controls and use the default template to show you how to access the values of your two text controls using the e.datasubmitted structure. From there you can call your global function and then create the rest of your logic based on the boolean result it returns. There are a lot of good videos on using Ajax Callbacks to trigger Xbasic functions in the video tutorials.

        Good luck!

What are "text controls"? Are you speaking of objects on a form? If so you refer to their values with

          objectname.value

In other words, the value property of the object on the form.
          There can be only one.

Re: Functions - how far to go with them?

            Hi Ira,
I am quite new in alpha five, (version 12). I need to make a call to a global function that I wrote which takes two parameters (these are the values from two text control on a dialog component. I am attempting to do two things which I don't know how..
            1. get the value of the two text control to send in as the parameters for the global function.(the global func returns .T. or .F. )

            2. I do not know how to call or trigger that function from an onclick event of a button on the dialog component. This is a web app.
            3. also, could you give me link to the answer above if possible and also link on how to create a PDF report from couple of SQL tables.??
I am so much in your debt for helping me. thank you so very much.
