Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha Anywhere Documentation

I'm just starting to develop in version 12, after having done a bunch of development in 11 over the last few years. I was, and am, excited about all of the new features and capabilities of v. 12, but when I start looking for updated documentation I found out that there doesn't appear to be any. There are some videos, which are great for getting an overview, but terrible for learning (due to their serial, non-random-access nature and lack of bookmarks.) Documentation Wiki doesn't appear to have anything about 12, not even a "what's new" -section.

How do you propose someone like me to start developing mobile apps with version 12 under these circumstances?

    Thanks!

Excellent, thanks! This is a great video to get one started.

As much as I like A5 as a development environment, I'm still rather astonished that there is no thorough documentation and a well organized help system. The Wiki is a poor substitute and leaves a LOT to be desired. Without a searchable, "random access" help system there is way too much trial and error going on in my development. Videos can never substitute for a good help system/documentation, no matter how good they are, because stuff flies by too fast in a video, and trying to find something later on that was explained in the middle of a video is an aggravating and a very time consuming task. Having bookmarks in a video could help, but it still wouldn't replace written documentation because videos, individually or together, don't have a searchable index or table of contents.

I sure hope Alpha will pay attention to this glaring omission and assign somebody to write up a decent help system with topic hierarchies, entries for each function, command, and PEM, full XBASIC documentation, full sections covering PhoneGap integration from A to Z, continuous integration topics, most important JavaScript topics for A5 developers, NodeJS integration tutorials, development tutorials, examples, best practices, etc. Documentation covering a dynamically evolving system like A5 is not a one-shot deal, so the person/persons responsible for documentation would need to stay on top of new features, deprecated items, etc. and integrate those topics into each new version. This would finally round out this otherwise excellent development system.

      Just sayin'.

I am very glad to watch those webinars - and glad to see them posted. I got confused the first time I wanted to attend by the fact that I am in the Central time zone so I showed up late instead of early as I had wished - BUT was glad to know they were available - thank you.
NOW, if you guys would just post a video tutorial on some ways to do some record level security, that would be GREAT!
I know in some PHP apps that interact with a mysql all you have to do is check a box to filter records by user, meaning whoever entered them as well as by groups.

So if I had a user that was part of company A, he could see only records belonging to company A filtered by group permissions as well - and another user belonging to company B would only see records pertaining to company B - ad etc.

          - wish list -

At any rate - having fun and glad you guys at Alpha do what you do, look forward to the next release...

            Re: Alpha Anywhere Documentation

Glad to hear it. I've been compl... I mean, talking about this for a few years already. Hopefully you'll get a proper documentation done sooner rather than later.

I'll check the videos and webinars for sure. And like I said, the videos are, by and large, very well done and quite helpful.
